... Hello Apache,

Just took our Labrador; Sandy to the vets for his Vaccination.

Previously, he had:

  • "Nobivac DHPPI" and
  • "Nobivac Lepto 2" on 8th November 2010 (08/11/10)
Today:

  • 1 SC dose of "Duramune". (we phoned two different local veterinary Surgeries and they both said that this one is the follow on to the Nobivac).
Sandys weight is 8.30kg.

She [Veterinary Surgeon], looked him over and said that she felt one testicle down and the other testicle was undescended.

As the Veterinary Surgeon checked his testicles, she said that Sandy kept "sucking descended testicle back up", so she couldn't feel the other one, as she didn't know whether he had sucked that one back up. apparently, this happened each time she checked.

UPDATE: Admin 2 has just checked, as Sandy in laying on his back, and she just confirmed that she could feel two testicles down. (We will keep checking though).

Advised us to keep an eye on this. The Veterinary surgeon was told at the start [this is our first time at any Vets with Sandy) that he was 12 weeks old. I asked what is the maximum time that they had to both come down, and she said 2-3 months.

Statisics show that this is the allowed time to for them to drop. She would allow another 2-3 weeks, unless he proves the statistics wrong. :)

She advised to seriously consider "Castration" if they don't come down and if we had no intention of breeding Sandy.

She said that the benefits of doing so were; but not limited to:

  • Sandy won't stop to wee every 2-3 Yards.
  • Sandy won't hump things
  • Reduces Sandys chances of Cancer
After his Jab, she advised us not to take him out for 5-7 days. (when we phoned the receptionist told us 10 days - after consulting a veterinary surgeon).

The cost of the Vaccination was

Testicles live in the scrotum because they are designed to run 1 or two degrees below normal body temperature. If they are retained in the abdomen or inguinal canal [where they descend from the abdomen, it's in the groin] then the increased temperature means that it is highly likely that it will eventually turn cancerous.

The critical point to me is that this as an effect over many years, and certainly not something that needs to be attacked with any great panic. That said a dog with a retained testicle MUST be castrated at some point, and it would be more expensive than a standard castration as it's a much bigger job.

It doesn't sound like ha has an undecended testicle, and I am bound by my professional body not to speak disparagingly of a fellow vet - so won't comment further here!

In my opinion I don't advise routine castration of male's whereas I do in female dogs. The benefits are those set out above; the cancer is of the testicles or prostate. A number of entire male dogs need castrating when they get old because of problems with the prostate. If he's not humping your leg and not grumpy then I would wait and see. Some people favour early neutering, but I like the dog to be it's adult size before I even consider it! If he has undesirable behaviour then get him done, don't leave it a long time as they become set in their behaviour patterns.

The eating slugs thing refers to canine lungworm. Some useful info here http://www.lungworm.co.uk/scripts/pages/en/home.php

Duramune's data sheet says "the onset of immunity is from two weeks after the second vaccination" and Nobivac doesn't say! I usually say a 7-10 days.

I wouldn't expect you too, Mate. Especially on a public forum. :|

We have had Sandy for two weeks (two weeks tomorrow). and in the first couple of days and a few times since then, he has tried humping, not the leg though.

The vet also aked if he had been itching and scratching.

He has/is. Around where is collar is and down by his tail (where it meets the body).

She didn't see or at least mention that he had anything - but she did say that Sandy don't appear to have any skin allergies (I believe it was).

If he was scratching the Advocate will sort it, if it's parasitic. Normal for an odd scratch around the collar.

It may be wrong of me to award a scoob (i will have to ask admin) but our resident Vet deserves one, thanks apache.

It's not wrong - He well deserves a Scoob. :)

I will check to see if I have awarded him one.
