Not quite so. There are a number of defence mechanisms in the lung - starting with the hairs in your nose, mucus and little wafting hairs to trap particles, resident immune cells.........Any form of foreign body enetering the lungs is a bad thing, this organ has litttle in the way of defence (if anything)...
I do a bit of woodturning in my spare time and I have one of the origional Trend air shields. They are a fantastic bit of kit. The fan wafts you in cool air and keeps things comfortable on hot days. I find it quite claustrophobic wearing a dust mask. Ignore the price on trend's website - they can be picked up for much less. Yes, I am aware of these mechanisms, but preventing such alien particles entering the body (the mask) is far far better, than having the lungs and throat throwing out unwanted yuk...Not quite so.
