Yes I believe he took early retirement and became duty manager at a big orange DIY shed. Well known for their pissh poor customer service and"..
I'm pleased to tell you I found the transformer under some flooring in the attic.
I have sourced a new one and will go to buy it tomorrow.

Wrong. MR16 means multifaceted reflector 16/8 of an inch in diameter. MR16 lamps are available in GU5.3, GU10, E14, small bayonet etc, and can be 12v, 24v, 120v or 240v.
The ones you describe with 2 thin pins are GU5.3.

I will re phrase that.
99.99% of consumer packaged "MR16" lamps will be a GU5.3 base and 24V
WHEN you find a CONSUMER packaged MR 16 lamp that is not, please post a picture here. to the consumer world, MR16=24V and silly little pins that burn out, and GU10 =240V and decent quality pins that last.
Well I got the new transformer but nothing is changed.
I have been working up on the attic to try and trace the wire which comes from the transformer but it has been covered by floorboards and lots of carpeting by previous owners-probably for insulation.
Thankfully the boards are not nailed down but it's a big job getting the attic cleared to expose the wiring.
I will have to do that anyway if I eventually have to call a sparkie out.
I don't know what else to try.
The old transformer was very heavy and it said 65A on it but there are none available with 65A -only 60A which I bought.
The electrical retailer persons seemed knowledgeable and assured me that it was the correct transformer for 3 x20 watt spotlights.

I repeat my previous warning ..................
Maybe get somebody in to check more thoroughly - after all you have located the transformer so you won't be paying anyone to do this
EDIT: I suspect the original transformer said 65 VA not 65A

Couple of things :
1) When its eventually sorted don't cover the transformer or the downlights with insulation .
2) I'd say you 've now reached where you need to be using a tester to see if theres a L & N 240V into the transformer , how confident are you using a tester ? We have to be careful telling unskilled posters to start poking about with live electrics .

I'm going to call in a sparkie when this virus thing dies down as I have reached the stage I have to admit this is no job for an amateur.
When I opened the light switch on the landing it's like spaghetti junction!
About four red wires three of which go into the one hole,blue wire,yellow wire,green wire, and a green/yellow one.
Three of them go up to the attic but I can't remember which ones but when I tested them up there They are not live.
It's not urgent right now as the nights and mornings are light but we will need it when the nights draw in.
I will definitely get a sparkie in as there is no way I can tackle it.

Got sparkie out a couple of months ago,tested whole house and tested the supply going to the attic and both ok.
Problem was between the two lights and the third one.He disconnected that third light and connected the other two lights to the transformer.
He advised me what to buy if I wanted the third light connected up.Told me how to connect it myself or he would come and do it for me.
I am totally satisfied with just the two lights.
Good result and very reasonably priced.
