OK, we have now started to sell an LED Floodlight PIR unit that uses approx

10 watts. I'm not sure I believe that I've been asked this, and I know times

are financially challenging at the moment but, does anyone know what consumption the actual PIR unit itself takes as the customer is worried that

it would be in the same region as a telly on standby mode.

I think he's Scottish by the way........

Just been testing a floodlight with built in PIR..

so stuck me meter on it to see what the PIR draws...

fitting has 2 x 75watt bulbs..

Pir trigger on load reading 0.66amps, (0.66a x 230v = 151.8watts:) ;) )

Pir no trigger, JUST PIR circuit reading 21ma, (0.021a x 230v = 4.8watts)

so for 1kwh the PIR will work for 208.3 hours. 8days and 16hours for 1Kwh of electricity.

curiosity got the better of me so stuck me meter on a couple of tele's..

Traditional CRT TV + VCR + DVD + Freeview box

0.46 all ON (approx 100watts)

80ma (0.08a) all in standby, approx 18watts.

CRT TV on its own:- 23ma standby, (0.023a), approx 5watts.

Portable flat screen LCD TV with built in freeview receiver

39ma in standby (0.039a) or approx 9watts

So the PIR is similar to some TV's in standby but lower than others! :) ;)

So it's not going to save the world or me any money turning TV off at the plug rather than leaving on standby!

Interesting :)

well put it this way..

there is a bigger surge when you switch it on from dead as opposed to switching on from standby.

If you had three PIR's at your house..

1 x courtesy light on front drive.

1 x security light back garden

1 x PIR operated bathroom fan....

they are taking more than you TV on standby IMHO.!

you would achieve more by taking 2 35watt recessed lights out of a fancy 8 or 9 light set up than switching your telly off..

In fact go back to the old fashioned 1 x 100watt pendant in each room..

save bucket loads of lectwicery;) ]:)

It annoys the hell out of me when they try to guilt trip people for leaving their TV on standby or throwing out a carrier bag - when the light pollution in the city's is severe, all the computers left on etc. People throw away 1/3 of all food bought - this is where the methane comes from at the tip - not the old carrier bags.

The emphasis is all wrong!

People think they are doing more good than they are.

when the light pollution in the city's is severe,
noticed how all 55W SOX street lights usually get replaced with a 150W SON (or MH depeneding on council)

also, who's bright idea was it to have lit dual carriageways and motorways. are they building new cars without headlights these days?! maybe turn all them off and your doing a lot more for reducing CO2 than turning your TV off instead of standby

or maybe its because the government wants to increase CO2, but to keep it the same, they want everyone else to reduce CO2

And methane is 4 or 5 times worse than CO2, which is why I support waste to energy schemes, (apart from the fact they solve some hole-filling issues and eliminate lots of expense involved with re-cycling). But I look at it this way, every little helps, and we have become very wasteful out of laziness / lifestyle expectation. The fact that newer tellys use hardly any leccy on standby is because of lobbying from the green side (and different technology) to reduce leccy wasted, and represents real progress.

The emphasis is on getting people to change behaviour, and in so doing to accept things need to happen/be done in different ways, and also to create economic pressure on the manufacturers of products to produce greener goods and services. 60 million people doing this even in very small and sometimes seemingly meaningless ways, does add up to a hill of beans and represents achievable targets today. The bigger stuff takes time and money to sort out, ergo progress is slow, and irritating when it is so obviously wasting so much more energy than the small stuff saves. Though still not as irritating as minor celebrities and footballers with their air-head lifestyles on my TV every night X(

i have also thought about the lighting of motorways, that up until now have been fine without lights and then someone decides that it is needed? why?

i cant remeber where i read it but i believe the biggest offender standby power consuption wise is a computer, no great suprise, but i believe that they will still draw a suprising figure when shutdown and left plugged in! not sure how accurate this is as i cant remeber where io read it.

Oh forgot to mention cows and termites generate huge amounts of methane, and therefore we should all become veggie and apache's cow will have to go to market to become pedigree chum:D:D:D

I wonder where horses stand in this context ?:| ? :| ?:| :(

Cows do generate huge ammounts of methane - they ferment their food in their first stomach the 'rumen'. The methane is burped up. Can't coment on termites but they make napthaline to protect their nests (learnt that from an episode of 'House')

Horses will produce negigable ammounts of methane as they don't ferment their food. :)

Agree on the Motorway point, however I'd imagine some quango worked out they could save 1 life per X miles if they flood lit more miles X(

As to computers: Turned off consumption is likely next to nil watts, I've never used sleep or hibernation mode and apart from laptops can't see the point

The parts of the computer that consume the most power are in order, Graphics card (assuming not integrated), CPU, Hard Drive and Screen. Some of the new high end graphics cards consume 400+watts peak, and it's not unknown for high end games PC's to have a pair linked consuming 900+ watts peak (e.g. Playing 3D games), as we know heat is a good indicator to where energy is being wasted, so if you have a 3 year old PC the CPU is likely running at 70-80deg, the latest Core2's run at around 30+ deg

I'm safe from the knackers' yard then :)

Just a thought, but seeing as you are always on here, how about opening a pets' corner so we can ask you lots of questions in your area of expertise?

For instance which is the best dry cat food for keeping cats' teeth clean??

I'm more than happy answering anything you may want to ask.

FTR I hate cats and I'm really a farm animal vet (I do dabble in smallies and horses)

:)

a vet that hates animals....bit like havin a sparky who hates electric!
No no no

Love cows - great creatures.

There's no requirement to actually like them. I like vetting not especially fond of some of the patients. You can enjoy your electrics but hate the minging council house you kneel in the dog **** :) Same thing
