id say have more lighting on motorways i think its very dangerous on motorways at night as in parts can be difficult to see where the lanes are with no lighting, more lighting the better/safer for dirvers especially doing 70+ mph

if they installed more cats eyes it would be a lot safer. you can see the difference immediatly between roads with & without.

or even make them with small LED's, battery & solar panel. wont need to be very bright

Andy,

IIRC correctly around the Swindon area they have "active" cats eyes, they work off headlight power or something, they seemed very good when I was driving around there a lot.

Can't remember the details though.

Can anyone else provide some more info?

we have new led street lighting and the leds are immensely brighter bordering on too bright.

i'd not be too quick to right the technology off over outputs to conventional

yes the active cats eyes work very well . define the road which really helps navigate it somehow

All cat's eyes work of vehicle head light beams, Why on earth would they want to make them ''active''?? They have worked for almost 70 + years in virtually every country in the world. Why change something that doesn't need fixing?? If these new eyes are active, ...it just means you added something that CAN and will need fixing when they fail... That to me, is just nonsense.... :| :C

from someone who does lots of night driving, small LED's in the cats eyes would be an advantage. and almost guaranteed to reduce accidents more than a camera or lowering the speed limit

a main problem with cats eyes is they get dirty, and dont reflect as well. if there is an inbuilt light source, then they should be more visible

ALL thats a bold statement Larn ;) especially when we already have active cats eyes on our roads :coat

its kinda hard to explain just how more defined the road is and the experience of them. i know they are only cats eyes but its like when you upgrade your head lights from normal to hid the difference is impressive not in brightness as such but the vividness somehow

the benefit is clear imo

cant complain at that Lee. would be much safer if all roads were that clear

and as a side note, without looking ont he net, who else knows what red/white/yellow/green cats eyes are for?

i believe the led ones have reflective back up too so if they last 10years on led then the reflect takes over has to be a good ting (thumbsupsmilie)

If you live in Cornwall you will know the county council is in the process of repacing .all their SON and Sox lamps with 150w mtal halide fittings.

Each unit is fitted with a node on the top instead of a cell, generally one in the area is the collector which talks to all the other units basically its an adressable system which allows central control of all lamps turning off and dimming areas to save money.

Cant find the link but i think its a ZODION system and the fittings are URBIS

I think Cornwall is ahead of all councils in the UK

i wouldnt have thought it would be too expensive to add the system to existing cats eyes (from manufacturer). it would be fairly basic - solar panel, battery, photocell, LED. basically a garden light....
