Hey all, just wondering what people did after they finished there studies to gain employment in the industry. I'm trying to change my career to become an electrician I start the 2330 level 3 soon. I check the job centre website but all the jobs on there ask for experience which I don't have.

So what did you do, write letters to company's, write letters to sole traders, apply for a for a position from the job centre? As I'm 27 I can't take the apprentice route so if antibody's been in a similar situation to me I would be interested to know how you got your foot in the door.

Hi Tim

It is a case of making yourself known and in a lot of cases it is who you know to give you a start . I was fortunate enough to know a couple of sparks who have given me jobs to do and this has been a valuable learning experience but above all increase your qualifications eg 17th ed update , C.G 2391 this will improve your chances especially when things pick up again but at the moment it is tough going but stick in there .... :)

I got made redundant in 1992 after only one year as a fully qualified electrician. I had a HNC plus many other great quals but I did not have much experience at all, however a company took me on and paid me less than the more experienced sparks. I put up with lower pay for a few years whilst I grew in experience, then in later years I obtained JIB credentials and become much more employable commanding a higher salary etc. Experience is priceless and it is sometimes worth suffering slightly lower wages to get it.

I've got my 17th booked in for October and then plan to do 2392 after the 2330 L3. I wouldn't mind taking a lower wage as I know how important experience is. I'm hoping by the time I've completed my courses things will have picked up and there will be more opportunities out there.
