Dear All and a Merry Christmas/Holiday to you all.

I have an issue with our second bedroom light - it has a dimmer switch and a dimmer bulb in. Unfortunately when the dimmer is on low to medium the light flashes and when it is on full the light is solid but makes a buzzing noise. This room is to become a nursery for our soon to be here son.

Anyone know what the issue is and is it something I can fix myself, if so how, or is it something I have to get an actual electrician out for?

Thanks in advance

Simon

It is the main bedroom light and not a lamp but the bulb we have put in is LED! Sorry no idea what CFL is!

CFL = compact fluorescent lamp. a lamp is the thing you put in that gives light. a bulb is something you plant

the problem you have is the lamp fitted does not work with your dimmer. either change the lamp to one that does work with a dimmer, or replace the dimmer with a normal switch

Thanks Andy! What lamp would I need and is it just a case of screws or would need to wire? Thanks

a dimmable one. but there are 2 types of dimmer, some dimmable lamps will only work with 1 type so you may still need to change the switch regardless of what lamp you get

Soon to be used as a nursery so I guess you will want to leave a light on but dimmed so I think your best bet would be , as the others have said ,  ask at an electrical wholesaler for a dimmable  LED lamp & a dimmer switch to suit  ( as Noz says a Varilight V Pro )  .

Shouldn't be a major task to replace , if theres a dimmer already there .

May only have two wires to it , or possibly two in the same terminal & one on it's own ....connect new one in the same way  but ....SWITCH OFF  first

Thanks for all the advice - my F-i-L will be replacing the dimmer switch this week, so hopefully that works!

Dimmer switches use Triacs and all triacs have a minimum load, the minuimum load on a domestic dimmer is usually 50watts. replace the lamp with a higher powered lamp like a 60watt.
