Hey guys.

I've been asked to carry out an inspection and test of a lightning protection system, fitted to steel ISO container that is use as a short term explosive storage building. I have been assured it complies with the reverent explosive regulations, which i have no issue with.

My concern is that in my opinion i am not qualified to carry out this inspection & test as i have had no formal training in the requirements of lighting protection systems (BS EN 62305). Also from my quick observations the system itself doesn't look right, the earth down conductors are 16mm earth wire connected to earth electrodes instead of solid copper down conductors.

I have aways thought lightning protection was a specialized trade requiring formal training, am i right in this thought?

Cheers

+1 also you MUST check your PI/PL, you need to be competent in the lightning proteciton stds & the Ex standards for explosive materials storage.

IMHO, walk away, no actually run away!

the earth down conductors will NOT be solid cable.

they will be more likely braid or even more common band, about 25mm wide strips down the outside of the building.

it may well be prudent to put a limitation on you PIR as to NO lightning conductor services or associated cabling have been inspected or some such.

Hey guys, thank you very much to everybody who replied. I'v told my line manager my concerns and advised him to pay the money and get a contractor out who specialises in lightning protection as im not touching it.

BS EN 62305 covers this.

Check furse who provide a useful PDF download which Summarises the requirements.

It seems to require a lot of risk assessment.

Or say to boss you want 2 days to investigate standards, and learn a new trick??? You'll still probably be cheaper than 'specialist' and get extra stirng to your bow.
