W10 is unlikely to be the cause of your laptop dying, unless it made the CPU run harder and the heat caused a failure - but that's a hardware fault.

As you are buying new I would spend a little more to get a PC with more grunt - and install W10, you'll need to go there soon anyway.

4GB is fine for basic computing, 8GB is better.

A faster CPU (i3 or i5) is better, but budget is king.

If 300 is your limit, go the PB and lash out on an external USB disk. You can use this to transfer the files from the old PC, then install Aomei Backupper free and use it to backup to the external disk - which you then store away from the PC.

cheers, Paul
Thanks Paul ,  I cancelled the 4GB RAM  one and am thinking again .   Don't mind spending a bit more to to get reliability  &  speedier searching .

I WOULD NOT abandon and dump your "dead" lappy yet. MADNESS! Do yourself a favour and just try a Live Linux disc. It'll take a few minutes once you have the disc. I'd recommend Zorin OS for a Windoze convert. Do you want me to put one in the post?
Laptop will not open at all , just bleeps , no screen  zilch !  asking  around localy , £50 to look at it .

The Missus has now bought an Amazon Fire Tablet which suits her .   I like to have the a bigger screen than laptops so go for desktop PC.

What makes are deemed to be the better ones then ?

As I said , this HP I'm using must be 12 yrs old  , no great problems with it TBH .

The big stores seem to go with HP, Levano, Acer & Dell .

Unless Packard Bell have radically improved I wouldn't buy one with anybody's money. They always had poor support and very often suffered from component failure
Thanks UNG

Trouble with these comparisons is like the motor car thing .

My work partner drives a Merc , had far more problems & repairs than me .

OK We have Mrs Dekes car which is an  Focus auto , not same class but does the same job . Takes you from place to place without walking .      Computer ...surf net ...buy on Amazon/ebay...play music vids...visit this Forum...send emails ....type & print invoices / Quotes..

Front brakes & discs on Merc ....£800

Front brakes & discs on Ford...£50

I hear Dell PC s  slagged off but see them in loads of commercial offices.   But the general slagging off puts me offthem .

Do they not all have the same generic components in them ?

@Evans Electric

I have a W7 OEM disc I can let you have if you want to try upgrading your present PC.

I'm currently using a PC I got gave by a member on here, not sure how old it is, but I'm sure its probably 10yrs +

We actually got a new 'house' PC a couple of years ago as the boys Xmas present, I think it was a free upgrade to 8G RAM , and cost just under £250 iirc. It may be a pentium i3 , but I don't honestly know off hand.

It happily runs W10 dual boot with Ubuntu ( I don't understand how windows works ) :C
Thanks for that offer Stepps ....I'm told that I can't upgrade from Vista to W7  & then to W10  .

I feel I've got old hardware , old technology, old OS that is no longer maintained by MS .

I have to admit that I knew begger all about computing and was quite happy until my electric typwriter died ...told my cousin I was looking for another one ..." Are you crazy"?   Says he . " You have to join the 20th Century , get a computer"  !!!    So I did and they're great , wonderful , super ..............until they go wrong.

If it just beeps on start up I'd be very inclined to start opening up doors and check everything is in place correctly,

Sometimes loose RAM can cause that sort of symptom.

Deke,

Get some  girly lager in the porch, the number of some local dancing girls, and I'll come down have a sort at it for you.

Seriously, :)

Oh  right , I'll get the back off tomorrow and  take a look see .

I did look at the back , not sure now if I need a special driver ...possibly daft screwheads or something  , I'll give it a go though .  Can always go buy the right driver .

I have to say this ..................its like having some really good mates on this Forum ....I've had a load of help , advice , offers of help ,  exam simulation CDs and certain other assistance  .   Just like to say that its appreciated when you post a query & people take trouble to pass on advice & help.  :Salute

I hope I have managed to recipricate in some way over the years .

PCs have some components in common, but it's all in the implementation.

IME Dell are no worse than other manufacturers, they just have a large installed base so a large number of faults are seen, even if the percentage is the same as others.

What is your budget?

Do you need a new screen or just the computer?

Do you want to self build or buy ready to go? Ready to go has an easier warranty.

cheers, Paul

p.s. Have you bought a backup disk yet? If not, why not?

Hi Onoff,    its a Dell , I counted the beeps , looked it up , answer was Motherboard  flubbered .   But its worth getting back off I guess.

You could try the simple things like hoovering the vents, taking out and plugging back the RAM and maybe HDD but I'd ditch it I think if it is the mobo. Had my boys Acer laptop reflowed a few years back (it was the GPU). Failed again at I think 2 days outside a 90 day warranty! Not cheap either at £160 but done for sentimental reasons (his 11+ present). Got him a cracking deal on a new HP laptop from Costco; 12GB RAM etc. Only downside is it's PURPLE! :) He doesn't mind though.

Edit: I brought the old family desktop back from the dead / terminal beeps just by cleaning out the impacted, dust filled heatsink fins over the CPU thinking about it.

Is that the one where the soldering on a BGA chip fails?

A known "fix" (which is probably only temporary) is wrap it in a blanket and leave it turned on for a very long time. It overheats the board to the point of re flowing the solder.  Even if it works it's unlikely to be reliable again.

What is your budget?     £380 --£400 tops       The 4GB Ram one I've turned down was £300

Do you need a new screen or just the computer?   Screen is fine , just a new desktop ,  Win10 , 8BG Ram , 1TB HDD , a Disc drive, Faster search than old one.

Do you want to self build or buy ready to go? Ready to go has an easier warranty.  Theres a small shop here, build a PC , repairs etc could be worth asking I suppose.

p.s. Have you bought a backup disk yet? If not, why not?    Oh .erm..was I supposed to to ?  I did a back up memory stick about 2 yrs ago .

Be careful with eBuyer. In the event of the kit packing up even within 12 months they will only refund a proportion. It's in their small print.

This is my boys:

But I got it from Costo for £399 oddly enough.
Yes, I'm sure it was you pointed that out a while back, but, I've also been told your statutory rights overide that, but I don't know, :C

I just reckoned what was the likelihood,?

That's a good laptop for the money.
