When switching on the lights the bulb popped in my lounge lights taking out the main breaker.

This has happened many times before and just required a reset on the breaker.

This time the breaker when reset isnt working and I have no power to the lights on that circuit.

my father-in-law tested the power with a tester and he says that there is power going in to the break

and also power coming out.

Can anyone advise me on the problem and maybe advice on how I can fix the problem, preferably myself.

if there is power coming out of the breaker but nothing working then you have a loose connection somewhere. if the breaker doesnt re-set then you have a fault. either way, without knowledge & test equipment, you may struggle to find the fault. probably best call an electrician to look at it

Had this a couple of weeks back and it was a loose neutral on the first light in the circuit.

Decorative light installed by owner 5 years ago, what a mess, he said it cannot be that I fitted it 5 years ago so why now. Changed all connections for Wagos and powered back up, he was still saying it must have been something else.

Had this twice this week and both times it had killed the dimmer switch. Happen loads of times before, just reset the mcb, but this time no lights in the room with the blown lamp. Dimmer died on both occasions.

Not a Hagar 6 Amp MCB by any chance?

Had a number of them fail to reset after a lamp blew and tripped them.

Need to replace it with a new one.

I was told that if you have a lightly loaded dimmer and the lamp blows then it can often take the dimmer out as well.  Not sure how true this is?
