Mains-fed smoke alarms

Hi guys,

Just a couple of questions regarding mains-fed smoke alarms if anyone can help:

(1) Do mains-fed smoke alarms have to be wired in series or can I feed 2 smoke alarms from the 1 smoke alarm, via 3C + E?

(2) With smoke alarms being inter-linked if 1 activates they will all activate. In a domestic dwelling if they are wired via 2C + E will they each activate independently?

Normally supply in T&E to 1st alarm then 3+e on to other(s)

They should be interlinked with 3 Cre to ensure all will sound when one is set off, but if they are not linked by 3rd cre then they will only alarm when smoke reaches them individually.

Aico make a Radio link base that WILL trigger other independant Alarms on system.

A customer asked me if he could have them activated independently in his house. I suggested to him that it would be better to have them inter-linked but I just thought i'd put the feelers out to see how I would go about it.

Not interlinked would not meet the BS nor the most basic requirements of the Building Regs.

The whole point of interlinking is so if a fire is detected downstairs, you get woken from your slumbers upstairs with time to escape.

I've already written one piece about stupid customers today!!

I've had a customer ask if smokes in a an extension have to link in with existing system... of course they do, If you design a fire alarm sysem then it has to comply with the regs, no exceptions!

The building regs only apply to new builds or complete refurbishment, so if you went in to add alarms in each floor and kitchen would you then need to interlink them all?

unless you interlink them, then they wont comply with 5266, regardless of any building regs

would you ignore 7671 just because your only installing a socket that doesnt need notified?

Interesting one that. I was talking to a building inspector on Friday and I mentioned smoke alarms and he said as long as they are interlinked so one goes off they all go off. This I knew already. The job I'm on at the moment is an extension with kitchen area and bathroom.hence visit from inspector as I'm not in a scam yet!! But if you are changing smokes on an existing circuit would you have to put 3 core and earth in ? and would customer be prepared to pay for it?

no expert with smoke alarm regs but...

if your replacing them for maintenance work, then as long as its no worse then you could just leave. if your installing any new then you would have to interlink all
