Trouble is Rev some people are just prone to high cholesterol and diet just won't help. Like you I am not a great lover of taking tablets. I am diabetic and over a certain age the government so I am told say diabetics should be on statin tablets. Now I refused to take them for years but for some reason most of the medical profession think you should be on them. Now my cholesterol was not high at all but in the end I agreed to go on them. My doctor put me on 40mg which is quite a high dose. I have been on them for a few months. When I have my next blood test I will decide if its worth staying on them. Trouble with tablets is the side effects.
I was tested and it was over 8. My GP did nothing about it at all, I decided to eat fruit and veg and loads of porridge every day. Did that for a year and went back to get tested again with a smug grin expecting a big reduction. It had gone up. GP still didnt seem too fussed. Went for an eye examination at hospital and blood tests were done. I was told by a serious looking indian doctor that I had very high cholesterol levels. I just laughed it off and said something like "don't worry about it I'm used to it" - his reply scared me and prompted some action on my part. He pushed the eye inspection machine to one side and leaned towards me and said (in indian head shaking side to side style) "let me be blunt with you - it will kill you". Without hesitation I went to my GP and insisted on meds for it - 40mg a day. Now its about 4.1

Yes I believe my high cholestrol problem is inherited but it was'nt skyhigh just slightly high so I am optimistic that I can bring it down slightly with dietary changes. I have done my homework and target foods that are known to help lower cholestrol.

I'm really sorry to hear of your diabetes and wish you all the best with your blood test. I hope you will be able to avoid the statins but if the doctor thinks they significantly reduce the risk of you getting a stroke then it's probably better to take them. If my cholestrol was very high I would reluctantly take medication for it.

OnOff thanks for sharing your experience. It's fantastic to see how you've managed to turn things around.

We have lads at work paying £80/90 a month for gym membership they don't use.
Those lads are getting ripped off. I am a regular gym user and my gym charges £20 per month.

Inherited disease? That's me fooked then! Family history was one reason they wanted to put me on statins. BUT how about this for a wake up call..............VASCULAR DEMENTIA..............We all know that if the old ticker is furred up they can do bypass surgery. I'd heard of dementia but I never knew exactly what it was or about the vascular bit until my mum was diagnosed i.e. that the same thing can occur in the brain literally furring up of the arteries there. And there is no op for that! They can slow it a bit but that's about it. Mum's always liked her good rich food and drink and WAS terribly houseproud. A double diagnosis of Alzheimer's AND Vascular Dementia was a shock as we'd figured one or the other. Last week she added Type 2 diabetes to the list. Sh!tty diseases all but it has it's lighter moments:

09:00hrs "Tea anybody?"

09:01hrs "I've stopped buying sweets and cakes.............now would anybody like an ECLAIR?"

09:02hrs "Tea anybody?"

Good on yer Steve about mentioning the ED bit; the old "40 over 40" campaign and all that. Jesting aside problems "down there" can be indicators of general blood flow problems. Seems it affects the (smaller?) extremities first!

I had the question about exercise years ago.

Told the quack that I went to a horror movie

once a week and let my flesh creep.

No....seriously.....I am losing it (my weight I mean).

We live in an time where the average age of the

population is increasing at an alarming rate.

The sense of impending doom arrives when you

realise that your blood group has been discontinued.

With all the apparent salad dodgers on here .........
I'm no salad dodger, salads dodge me ! eg, last night I bought a rocket salad from Tesco but it went off before I had a chance to eat it !.

Very physical day at work yesterday. I was on my own in the leisure centre (large upgrade). Before I even get started it's about 25C !. Installing conduit in stairwells and between floors. Up and down flights of stairs non stop for the whole shift.

good workout. I had a run on my treadmill yetserday first time in 5 weeks - hard going and to make matters worse my sound system in the garage has broken!
Nice one. Now you need a decent electrician to come and take a look at your sound system. Steptoe is only a 2 hour drive away you know !.

Blood pressure testing is all very well but from

what I have heard from colleagues going to a

quack to have it done is so stressful that the

figure is more likely to be higher than it would

be if you had never made the appointment.

Better using one of those kits that are out of

Argos and Boots.
