Haven't seen any of these for years, then in the last month have been asked to rip  these out on 3 jobs.

2014-07-17 15.13.07.jpg

Brings back memories of the apprentices job of making up a bell set for the only testing  ever done on a job.

Any one else come across some old equipment ?

Any one who has never seen these, they were a cardboard box with 3, 1.5v battery shells inside connected to give 41/2 volts. With handy screw clamp terminals you could use these in loads of places

Remember them well Slippery...........and also used them for bell sets ....and also the only testing done .

Mainly used them for buzzing out bunches of control wires  ...it was quicker than marking all the cables .

Never seen one like that Marvo although we still have the 6V with the springs on top for torches.

I also remember similar batteries with springs on top.
The spring top ones are still commonly used here for flashing beacons used on roadworks, skip markers etc, 6V if i remember correctly and last ages now as all the lights are LED.

.
Just remembered most jobs did also have a wind up Megger, but that was mainly used to clip onto apprentices trouser bottoms when they were up the steps. It was occasionally used on 1000v to blow clear faults that the rewirable fuses couldn't.

I have a tester that I still use which needs two of these. They're not cheap when you can find them.

I think here they were known as Pp4 or PP6. PP7 Or PP9'batteries

Back in the day when we had proper batteries like U2s. And U11s

The 6v ones with the springs on top were called PJ996 the PJ stood for plastic jacket. The useless information we retain is worrying yet I can't remember what my wife asks me to do from one hour to the next.

I still use a torch that takes the PJ996 battery, recently converted it to led, works a treat.

According to Youtube  the 6V  spring top battery is made up from a load of AA batts  and is a cheapo way of buying them after cutting open the 6V  spring top .    And every time I forget to try it so cannot verify the truth of this .

We only had a megger onsite if it was a pyro job .

h those 6V ones with the springs.

Used them a lot. flippin expensive even back then, but if you knew how to open those roadside flashing beacons then free batteries. :innocent

I liked the BIG lantern batteries that fastened directly to the big torch......like a massive version of the one in the OP.

When they went flat you could cut the top off and use as a desk tidy, or holder for screwdrivers and bits on the bench as it had six compartments inside it

Found them!

What were the blue ones, oval shape on top with springs, 4.5V from memory similar to the first post. You used to get the torches made the same shape?

SP, HP.......... those were the days!

Wasn't SP Super Power and HP was High Power. Never was sure which one of those was the highest.
Not resorted to Google yet but I was sitting here thinking SP was "standard", blue? And HP was "high" and orange?

When I get into this bottle of Lidl's finest Pinotage shortly I may cheat!

£3.99/14.5% - can't go wrong!

Oh yes !!!!   Not seen one of those for years  . :)    Always one next to my Mom's cooker.

It had a little element on the end of the stalk ...press the button , it glows and you light the gas ring with it .
