Just doin a pir and have found property has a metal cu if I remember rightly it should be rcd protected on the incomer before cu if its metal can anyone confirm and would this be a code 1 or code 2 not come across this situation before and I know customer will want all information when he returns

A Metallic consumer unit may only be an issue if it is installed on a TT installation.

It would only require 30 Ma protection [ Time Delayed] upstream if the entry hole in the C.U. was not provided with suitable insulating ....i.e. Grommits

Surely easier in most cases to just grommet/suitably insulate the entry holes?

what about if the cable rubs thru and touches the case inside

With double insulated cable in a grommeted hole, I think the risk is negligible!

it is small never the less protection is required the cable could easily burn back the isolation from loose connection etc

Whether the entry points are grommeted is irrelevant. And the upstream protection would not have to be 30mA, just low enough to provide disconnection within the required time for the earth-fault loop impedance at hand. In practice, a 100mA or 300mA RCD is likely to be quite adequate in most cases.
