Hi.

Has anyone on here had experience of moving away from london to a coastal area.

How didi it go? Was there work avaliable? or did you struggle financially?

My wifee really wants to move but i am tbh scared of leaving this prosperous city as i am ready to buy our first house from the council with a big discount avaliable.

I WANT TO BE SURE THAT I WILL BE ABLE TO GET WORK wheather that be employed or self employed.

any one with views on the subject please post.

Thanks

Paul

furthest east i can travel is 2 mile... any futher and ill be in the north sea

probably better thn in london, hate going there. too much traffic (although A1 around gateshead can be worse than the M25)

Hi andy.

have you always lived in the area.

are yopu self employed.

do you have long dry spells with no work.

in london i can usually find work pretty much as soon as i have finished the last job.

Paul, life is what YOU make it, if you are proactive then moving anywhere is not a problem.

I moved away from a large city 10year ago to a remote village in the middle if nowhere, nearest large town/city is 20 mile away. So I have to travel further sometimes 1.5 hr but I still make a comfortable living from it but have all the peace and tranquility I want.

I work in a big city and can't offer any first hand advice (  other than having worked in London just a few times, its the further away the better TBH )    Please don't take offense at that , but having worked around the country ,  London was the most unwellcoming place this side of Jupiter.

The Welsh Valleys were the best   and Newcastle a close 2nd  if you were wondering .

Back to your post though ,  my neighbour moved to Anglesey  a few years ago , said there was plenty of scope for Sparks, plumbers etc  as they were so few on the ground there.

Don't forget you are also in competition with other tradesmen for that job etc.

Your missus is probably right ...that move could be the best thing you ever did.

I keep telling him not to turn left ......he,s lost five vans in the sea  now .......does he listen !!   :C

Well I found Oxfordshire became too congested for me. Having to travel from South of Oxford to North of Oxford up the A34 every day was just too much. I used to dread the journey home on a bank holiday friday, or any day when the weather was not perfect.

So I moved to the Highlands 10 years ago.

That was when I started self employed, prior to that I was always an employee.

Traffic jams are rare up here (unless you insist on going over the Kessock bridge in rush hour, but I rarely work down that way)

And no problem finding work. Sometimes I complain I have too much of it.

I wouldn't go back.

Thanks for your views people.

i am one of lifes go getters so i reckon i could find work wherever i go escpecially now that i have read these comments.

Thanks again

Paul.

always lived here. not usually a problem for work. probably 70-80% is within 5 miles, most of the rest within 10 miles. dont really have long dry spells. maybe get the odd quiet week but thats about it

where are you planning on moving to? maybe have a look online and see how many other sparks are in that area

thanks andy.

We are not sure yet where. maybe folkestone or even great yarmouth way? really unsure if itll even happen but i always tryed to avoid the subject before because i was wotrried about work.

now i feel a lot better about it so i wont be so dismissive when we talk about it in future.

Good advice about seeing how many sparks there are in the area.

the thing that got me worried was that in the past we wanted to move i have set up job alerts from recruitment websites in the areas we were considering i.e. diss and folkestone and compared them to london.

in london iprobably got an average of 30-40 jobs a day but only 10 in other areas.

Don't bother with North Birmingham, Paul  , theres a 1000 sparks per acre here .......difficult to find someone who is'nt a Sparks round here .    I Googled the Electrical Safety Register to find myself and my nearsest sparks was my mate Bob .!!!

thanks andy.

Don't think you can compare with a big city Paul .

I'm from a small Yorkshire coastal town and went to London to study. The cost of living in London is HUGE compare to elsewhere. You can enjoy the same (or better) standard of life for less money outside the hell-hole that is London. God awful place.

Ive worked in a fair few places,

in fact this is the longest Ive ever been in one place [almost 7 years, married now,  :| ]

and Ive never had problems finding work anywhere,

its about putting yourself out there and not expecting the country to owe you a living, IMHO

Stepps---- Wish you'd tell that to all these taking over ...bringing their skills and expertise to this city and creating all this wealth and not putting the NHS and Social Services & housing Dept. under any strain . :innocent

My brother moved to Devon a few years back but works in agriculture. He has always found work and is self employed working for a few farmers.

When you say you are getting a huge discount from council is that transferable? Do you have children? Does your missus work?

I think you should find work although it can depend on the area in some areas you may find people only like to use the people they know. Why not take a holiday somewhere to get a feel before you take the step.
