Another myth of the trade. Another subbie at the same hospital decided that , although there are 20mm knockouts in both ends of socket boxes, you can't pass the other leg of the ring through the box in case the box needs to be removed. Again the same engineer was totally baffled and not impressed.

You will not believe Myth of the Trade 3 but thats for tomorrow, I,m trying to do a quote and getting nowhere.

now it may be an inconvenience if the ring legs going through box need removed to change a box, but nothing againt the regs that i know of. Anyway, if it was a ring, then it should only be a leg between 2 sockets, it shouldnt go from DB to far end, so wont be that hard. failing that, just cut the cable, change box and crimp back together

I can help with your quote Deke... :D

"To be or not to be.. That is the question.. whether it is nobler...................blah...... blah.... blah......"
or perhaps

"Thats one small step for man.... but one big step... blah.... blah.... blah...."
any help?

Well the other leg would be at the next socket, Andy, thats how I wire them , a leg to each alternate socket and join 'em together at the last one. You'd just pull the other leg back, , how many times does someone change the box anyway !!! Although a different guy from Myth 1 he was also adamant that it must be done this way.

thats how i would do it, but i have worked with some who insist on taking one leg to far side, then wire each all the way back

box would only need changed if there was some kind of damage, like impact or something. which could have damaged the cables anyway

Not really Specs but amusing nontheless ( is that a word)

I'm promoting Myths of the Trade 3 at the moment which I promise is true athough hard to believe.

I don't do them all at one go purely because it drives Andy up the wall having to wait. !! ;)

unbalanced ring then ???

the little commercial work i have done that would be an absolute pain in the bottom to pull through

Not really Theo, you don't want a blooming great long loop of cable running all the way down the conduit to the far end , so each leg alternates from plug 1 to plug 3 and plug 2 to plug 4 and so on . Joined together at the last plug.

What the hell is an unbalanced ring anyway ? New one on me !! It would'nt be Myth of the Trade 4 would it ? :D

i agree with you

read my post and it didnt come across very clear.

as for an unbalanced ring.......you try to avoid having all the sockets towards one end

otherwise you may get too much current flowing through one of the cables

Andy , you have lost me with this one , what top bloke are you on about ? Have you been Guiness DrinkGuiness DrinkGuiness Drink or is it me ? One of us has lost it .

all the load at one side. if you have a 2mtr run to first socket, then another every 2 mtrs, and at the end, a 30mtr run back to board, most power will go the short way so most loading will be on the cable most direct. potentially overloading it

Blimey, theres always something new to learn in this trade. I have to say though, there are enough everyday problems without adding "unbalanced ring mains" , methinks.
