hello chaps,

have to fit a oven rated at 4.9kw, the old one is pluged in so have to run a new circuit in.

the cu is a old wylex with mcb's with no spare ways, cu mounted tight to celing with no chance of taking boards up.

so was thinking of instaling a shower unit with a 32a next to the cu, but with no spare way and unlikely to be able to get the tails out to split, i was wondering if i could use 10mm2 tails (if there is such a thing) and take from the mainswitch with the existing tails.

does this sound ok?

also if you split the tails or use a mcb as a submain feed, how is the best way to cert the job with out exess paper work.

thanks

paul

you should be able to use a bit of 10mm T&E. but getting it into the same terminal as tails may be a problem. TBH, id probably use 6mm anyway.

you can also get 'tails' down to 1.5mm

Obviously you'd need an earth to your shower unit so what's up with 10mm T&E?

Could you split the tails after the meter?

10mm tails doubled up in main switch with 60-100A fuse upfront??????????????????????

Make sure you leave them with their free gift.

problem being? overload by MCB, fault by service fuse.

think of how many houses only have 6mm tails (or even 4!) and dont have any problem.

If its only feeding a shower you could argue no overload required

So the cable only requires to be protected against short/fault current

would be better, and then straight into RCD. but be aware the some older wylex have a max of 30A per way (some have a 45A holder to the other side of the main switch)

if it was poss to create a spare way, would it be better to take the supply from this or to split the tails?
May be cheaper overall and better solution to change the whole CU ! ;)

Pick up a cheap fully equipped CU maybe?

ahhh ok, i was thinking of the ones you put before the cu.

so judt get a 2way case and fit a rcd in to it, i take it my feed would come straight out of the bottom of the rcd to the cooker.

thanks
