Just been & paid the contractor that trenched the school carpark for the workshop job I did a few weeks ago (posted pics a while back)... He informed me that SSE were on site last week when his lads went to collect their harris barriers, SSE boys were busy digging up the front step + demolishing the front door threshold & a section of the floor base of the workshop.

The builder (so the caretaker told SSE guys) clipped a mains cable when digging the footings, nothing went bang so he carried on with footings, poured concrete & built the workshop...........

moisture has got in &.......................... bang...result .....

Adjoining primary school & a small section of housing estate blacked out.

SSE have told the school they are considering that the building be demolished & want to speak to builder as the workshop sits astride the 33Kva mains ug conductors.

MV and HV cables that are ''direct buried'' should be marked along the finished ground level every 50 meters (i think it is) and at points of change in direction, where they pass through areas of general habitation. Clearly this hasn't been the case here. :C

Also, If this was a ''new build'' then the local planing office obviously didn't do a very good search either on the planning application, because those HV cable routes should of shown up like a proverbial beacon!!! :red card

If the new build couldn't be found an alternative siting, then as a last resort the cable(s) could have been exposed and had split duct installed around them. The then exposed trench with the split ducts in place, back-filled with concrete with at least a 10/15cm surrounding cover that would extend 1.5 to 2 meters either side of the new build. :| :coat
