hello chaps,i have to put up a light fitting and there is no earth in the fitting, so need to install one.

whats the best way of doing this?

thanks

paul
re-wiring the circuit would be best

failing that, a new earth between light & DB, clearly labelled.

do not take it from another local circuit. if that circuit is disconnected, so is your earth

I drill a small hole & using a ring terminal on the cpc then nut/bolt to the fitting as close to the ceiling as possible.

Does it actually require one? Are you sure its not a Class II fitting?

ahh sorry andy, my bad english again, its an old metal ornate fitting that only has 2 singles in it. the circuit is twin& e
first: check that it really does need an earth. newer ones may be DI, but since you say its old, it probably does need an earth

hole/bolt through somewhere with an earth to it would work. but it may also be possible to take apart something else thats bolted inside (like the light to the cover), and fit a larger ring terminal round that instead

the spark who took the light down ( in london) told the customer it needed one so am taking his word for it, the job is an hour away from me so will take every thing just in case.

thanks chaps

Never take anyones word for anything. Check to see if there are any markings to signify class II I have made this mistake in the past, and on closer inspection have found it to be so.

I spent about an hour one day on a "test and fix" type PIR trying to get earth continuity on a "brass" chandelier before I realised it was plastic!

I bet we have all done it

I have just done a couple of brass wall fittings rewired them and have earthed them through the new lampholder which seemed an easy option as before they were badly earhed through the brass screws that fitted them to the wall.

"chrome" shower waste?"bronze" wall lamp?

Or is there one I haven't made an a**e of myself with yet?
had the odd portable appliance not getting reading, only to discover its class II, but looks like something that should be class I
