I must be really anal - I use black for Neutral, sleeved with blue, brown for Live and grey, sleeved with Brown for switched live looks lovely!
No need to sleeve the grey, it's a phase colour being used as a (switched) phase.

Trouble with making a special cable , say 2 browns and a blue we would then moan that we have to buzz out the 2nd brown.
I would like to see a cable that's blue, brown and grey.

Just like in the old says, I would have loved to have had a cable that was black red and yellow.

Instead we are forced to use a cable with 3 phase colours, then pick one to use, and sleeve as neutral.

NO, why TF are you all going against good guidance,

unless Im having DejaVue we have had this all before,

there is even guidance about it,

and,,,,,

I even done an explanation for all you non sparks out there,

why are you suddenly changing your stance on L1 L2 and L3 for now being L1 L3 and L2 ?

catch a grip folks,

and you wonder why we are treated like the muppet trade when even supposedly trades people cant get it right?

is it any wonder the gasmen are streets ahead of us in both wages and respect?

harmonise,

that means moving with the times, NOT using RWB,

using what the regs give us and recommending us to use,

not making it up as we go along.!

Not sure were you think this guidance comes from steps what should have happened it was written in the regs. Personally I have started using black for switched live on single phase and grey fo neutral but this is only because the lad that has been working with me does it this way. This deneutralizing thing is a NICEIC thing there is nothing in regs that says it has to be done that way and my scheme provider says any colour can be used for what you want as long as they are sleeved.

Table 7A Appendix 7 page 342 gives examples for using harmonised colors for 2 & 3 core cables..

OLD Red L1 = NEW L1 Brown

OLD Yellow L2 = NEW L2 Black

OLD Blue L3 = NEW L3 Grey

OLD Black N = NEW N Blue

I understand that NIC have just followed this guidance on their pocket guides 3 & 4...

Another myth that Nicy are making up their own rules I believe?

AFAIK if using 3-core colours on single phase, it has generally been standard practice for donkeys years to use the L1 & L2 colours for your Lives & Switched Lives and use the L3 for your neutral.

As Step's says Why Change??? :C

from what Andy ?

red

white and

blue,

cos thats the original colours and nobody had any problem using yellow instead of white, so now why all the problem of using brown, black and grey?

i never used red/white/blue, but i guess there was nothing wrong with it then they then changed it then to red/yellow/blue. and now dark colour, almost similar dark colour, and another similar dark colour

if it aint broke, dont fix it

Which edition was that?So it's gone from earth, to neutral, to live.

Wonder what next?
not sure which but seen it a few times on installations that need rewiring so probably a very old one and don't dno use black earth cables down telegraph poles.

My reference suggest Green was Neutral and Black was Earth in the 7th edition 1916 and Black was still an Earth colour in 12th edition 1950. but it was also available as a Neutral colour in the 12th? This was while Red White Blue were Phase 1,2 & 3. As someone said, why not keep things simple and go back to the old days!

Doc H.

Don't be surprised - some bodger out there will use Green/Yellow as live!!!!!!
