Hi Guys,

I want to run a cable to my outside building so i can put an waterproof socket and 4 lights in the garden. I have a spare way in my fuse board so i can fit a rcd.

Should a run out armoured cable to the sockets and lights and make the connections in waterproof junction boxes. and what size cable. I was thinking 4mm.

shiner,

"MUCH" more info required please.

A spare way in the consumer unit does not = being able to fit an RCD, and an RCD will not provide overcurrent protection.

How long is the cable run, and possibly a hundred more questions before realistic advice can be given really.

the cable run is about 6 meters to the socket. the board is a current and up to date.   would an rcbo be better

As Stepps says , there should already be RCDs in place .  If not , fit a 16A MCB  in that spare way then fit an RCD in a box adjacent .  Or fit a metal RCD spur unit , gland your cable into it ,. 13A  would be fine .

Use 2.5 x 3core SWA  to the socket and a w/proof spur as a switch  for your lights.

Now stand by for a 100 variations on that theme. :innocent ;)

Think deke mean't to add you can use smaller cable for the lights depending on length of run to lights.

Do us a favour, post photo of CU and give us some distances to socket and lights.
