Binky,

I think we are cross purposes, I refer to silver braze as silver solder, so as to distinguish it from brass based brazing alloys.

600 is a lower melting point, the silver solder alloys I have used are all above 500 melting point.

Brass based tend to be around 700, well the ones I have used anyway.

I also know them as hard soldering alloys, rather than soft soldering alloys.
there are many variables in the field of solder. Most of my experinece is in the electronic industry. Can't stand most modern solders anyway, they've taken most of the flux out and it just doesn't work the same anymore, like sniffing a bit of formaldehyde ever killed anyone, at the time you could still smoke in pubs......

I run my iron @ 450 most of the time, regardless of melting temp of the solder, offers a thermal cushion to heat the joints up quicker, in and out as quick as possible and all that! ;)
mine is the same. it was a temp controlled one, but the controller packed up. so i just removed the controller and put a plug on the end of the flex...

probably the best soldering iron ive ever had... did get one to replace it last year, but then just ended up as spare

Tis done.

I'll get pics up asap, just come back in from bleeding` callout.

The bars still had the lugs welded in place, but the bolts had heat cycled so much, they were solid. The crimp lugs has disintegrated, so they have been cleaned and replaced. I'm waiting to get ptfe cable, should be with us in a day or two.

Cheers for all help.
