Was supposed to start a job last Tuesday but got a call from the customer saying some one had died can I put it off a week, I said yes even though I had no other work booked in as had no choice lucky I managed to fill in most of the week,

Not just had a phone call can I put tomorrows start date off until next Monday do some people think we are just sitting around at home swatting for them! Most annoying bit is I turned down a job as I was too busy and they needed it done quick!

Yeah doesn't help that I did it abit cheaper to get the job as didn't have a lot of work booked in for first week after the new years thinking about telling them to stick it.

Makes me chuckle sometimes when customers think that you must be sat by phone waiting for work. I make a big deal of it with customers, letting them know just how busy we are and that it is us doing them the favour and not the other way round!

Times are slowing down now though.

As I predicted just before the new year, it's quite slow here. Today's job, fitting new flex onto 3 table top light fittings for a neighbour. Not the sort of thing I usually do, but just for friends and neighbours.

Apart from that, all I've got on now is small jobs, things like fix a boiler, fit a couple of extra sockets etc.

So at the moment, a lot of the time I AM sat waiting for the phone to ring.

At least I know there's a new build coming up in the spring, and the second fix of a large new build when the owner is ready (that one is taking a long time as he doing most of the work himself)

Yeah is annoying I called and left a voicemail saying tomorrow or find some one else, all ready cost me few days of no work and had to pay my mate a days wage as I didn't give him much notice! So out of pocket all ready

I've had a couple of situations like that myself lately. I'm subing on a site at the moment first and second fixing. It's regular pay so I'm happy with it. any jobs that have come in then I have been able to fit them in on a saturday.

how inconsiderate of them dying like that. You have to think of them and their loss. I guess electrical work is the last thing on their minds. I know its tough out there but people come first.

Welcome to the club Dave. I only have one job on but that suits me these days , previously the phone would be ringing every day and I'd struggle to fit everything in . Phone has'nt rung with a job from begining of December to now .

Think we'd best get used to it M8!!!

Makes me wonder if it really is worth leaving my job to start my own company. Had 10 jobs today for my employer for the same wage as if I'd only had one job! I guess if you don't try something then you will ne'er know!

Tricky one, but.....speaking from bitter and recent experience it works both ways. My Mother in Law passed away on saturday; today my baby grandaughter has been on the operating table for 3 hours. She now cannot walk for at least 3 months. I have had to tell my customers that for the next couple of weeks I may well not turn up when promised OR may have to disappear at short notice.

Having said all that, I agree with you totally! Can't get in this day, can't get in that day, I am going out early so will not be there to let you in. etc etc etc THEN they supply some carp that they got from the freaking charity shop for you to fit! THEN the job expands and the finishing date either remains the same OR gets brought forwards! THEN they ask you to fit the sound system [that came without wire] as the Plasterer is in a rush and is coming in the morning. Then.................sorry, being a bit moody at present......................... :coat

yes and then factor in holiday pay, van, insurance, scam membership, training, advertising, quoting for work etc and you will be thankfull the buck doesnt stop with you.....
Indeed

Sorry to hear your bad news and hope the baby gets well soon! ;)

Yes I can understand putting off for some one dieting but the 2nd time the excuse was its not suitable for them as they where busy would of been nice to give me notice of less than 24 hours

Thanks, I am sure she will be fine. As far as she knows this must be normal and she will get on with it, it's just everybody else who is panicking a bit. Looking around the Ward that she is in it makes you realise how lucky you are; her problems are nothing compared to some of the poor little things................

I met my friend John the Tiler today (who does floor and wall tiling) He's on his last job and his phone hasn't rung yet this year. When I said I think we are heading back into recession, his reply was "we are already there"

Still not all bad news. After our chat, it seems they will want me to PA test the stuff in the village hall, including the PA gear and the stage lighting gantry. That should be a little more interesting than office PAT testing (pc's and IEC leads)

Well i am busy at the moment and my main builder i work for has three jobs on the go. If i did not have this work though things probably would be different.
