I have recently started working for a Photovoltaic Installation Company. I am currently in my last year studying C&G 2330 and will be finished in June. i should also note i have already gained my 2382-10 as well.

When Installing a PV system, a new A.C. circuit is required from the consumer distribution board to the inverter of the PV system. This circuit is usually installed and tested by a Sub-Contracted Electrician. However, because I am studying Electrical Installations at college, the company would like to be able to have myself install the circuit and then, eventually Test the circuit, as they have the intention of putting me on C&G 2391 Inspection and Testing.

I would like to know whether the addition of the Circuit would fall under the full scope or Defined competence. Also I would like to know of anything further myself or the company I work for will need to do to become Part P accredited by an accrediting body.

Furthermore any information you could provide about the route we need to take and the cost of an application would be greatly appreciated.

Kind Regards

Not sure a new circuit can be defined so would have to be full scope. If you are doing installs mostly in domestic premesis then 2392 may be easier if you want the testing experience.

thankyou for your reply. I was looking at this yesterday but i was concerned about a few points. Its says on the NICEIC website that they require 2 sites for assessment. I am unsure if the work i will be doing will be enough for them to accredit me or my company. (the ac cable for inverter to distribution board and then testing for commision)

have just noticed 2392 is a level 2 whearas 2391 is a level 3, would it not be more benficial to do the 2391? i have no problems getting on the course (dad is the lecturer) or are there benfits to doing both 2392 and 2391?

Sorry for the 3 posts in a row

would it be beneficial to enrol on the NICEIC domestic installer scheme? would this help me/company become accredited?

2392 is an "easier" course that is aimed more at domestic so if you have not had too much exposure to I&E then it could be a good grounding for 2391.

As I understand it, a company is registered with a scheme not a person so if you want to take the registration with you if you leave (or do other work outside your current employer) then you will need to set up your own company and possibly have the work subbed out from your employer.

thankyou

i have been doing some more research, my main worry is if the electrical work we do is enough to satisfy the 2 site assessments required for the accreditation.

i have found the bpec part p course. it does say that this will make me/ company part p qualified and specifically states that i will be able to teast and certify my own work.

is it worth it?

also i found this course for Solar PV, this aslo states that only the elctrician is requred to complete the final grid connections and testing to become a full installer.

That course is only open to people already assesed for full scope. Also I do not believe a spark can self certify work undertaken by someone else as I thought BC (or a spar authorised by BC) could do that.

i would be certifying my own work.

also i know i would have to do the 1st course in linked to do the second.

this is turning out to be quite confusing and the niceic are just forwarding me around their offices which isnt particualry helpful.

Give ELECSA a call then. They always seemed more 'in tune' with sparks, well to me at least.

To be honest Karl, its not your problem, its your boss's problem . He will be paying for it . As far as I know an employee does not have to register for the competent person's scheme. He may want you to be the qualifying manager however, so a rise should be in the offing.

Deke

But you won't be able to self certify works outside the company that you may do 'on the side'.

You'll probably find that his boss doesn't know what to do so has passed the buck to Karl.
