I am maybe having a blonde moment but how do you IR test an appliance during PAT without dismantling it?

I would unplug appliances during IR test in order to get a reading.

Those bits of brass sticking out of the plugtop make ideal testing points. :)

Ok Stuart,

I know it seems stupid but surely you need open circuit to get a reading for IR test

what about the various electronic components neons etc?

For PAT Testing, you test L/N to Earth (CPC), so in theory any connected circuits/indicators are not affected. So as such you are not applying power across the load etc.

thank you Don

that makes sense now:)

if you really want to test L to N, the appliance may have an off switch.

otherwise, short L to N and test to earth only (which is almost always done)
