Evening all,

At the moment im considering finishing my job as an electrcian and setting my own business up involving PAT testing, iv been searching around and there seems to be a big gap in the market for my area and there are alot of industrial units where i live so i could get there business as i am local.

I know u can take these course which 1 would be best to take or maybe both?

2377-11 Management of Portable Appliance Testing

2377-12 Inspection and Testing of Portable Appliances

I havent done any PAT testing for who i work for since i started.

Plus i would also like to get into the fire alarm systems and EM light systems by means of testing and maybe installing, what can i do to aid me in this route as well, i have installed small fire alarm panels and EM's.

Plus maybe further down go into fire extinguisher testing and training this still an open market here so i would be using my fire service knowledge into this.

Cheers guys.

Matt :)

For local authority work and for customers who are iso whatever it is nowadays you will need the 2377-12

For everyday testing you are not even required to have any formal qualifications. Just prove competancy.

Most fire alarm companies run training sessions on their own panels, this knowledge can be transferred to other makes once you have an understanding of the systems.

You will need to have in your possesion the book for fire alarm systems which I do not have to hand just now but costs about

god i couldn't think of anything worse than full time PAT testing!!!!
A company near me pat test socket outlets!

I wish I could get away with that:^O

Remember, you will have to compete on price with the "Plug, press, sticker" brigade. No proper inspection, no fuse checking, minimal paperwork just in and out in a flash AND cheap. :red card

How would you prove competency on your first job without the qualification?

Portable Appliance Testing is a cut throat business with the bigger frims doing it for such small amounts that its just not worth the hassle. You might well do a more thorough job and check the plugs and fuse type but at the end of the day a customer just wants the green stickers and the bigger companies who charge less than
