Maybe we should follow the mp rules, anything under 250quid doesn't require a receipt!

nice post Andy :) scoobed mate
and a good link,

Im just wondering where my contract starts and finishes?

is it with each payment, each monthly return, or each term of work?

as I said, Im not overly concerned with my CIS for these folks, Im actually hoping it will pretty much cover my tax bill, but I dont want to get caught out on the wrong side,

a lot of what I do does actually come under CIS for sure, rewires etc, but a lot doesnt, maintenance, then we have the general re-furbs, partial re-wires, what about those? if they dont come under CIS that would be really good for me. :)

i would say each 'contract' is each job you do for them (makes sense for me, but then i only do a few jobs per year, and could be months apart)

i dont really know much about the CIS scam, just some exemptions for when people try and get out of paying in full when they have no reason to deduct

Cash for some jobs is good for everyone in my opinion as its cheaper for the customer and the company as then we don't have to give more to the muppets of the country to squander it on enquiries just like the pointless Murdock scam

The problem for small businesses with alternative payments to cash are that banks card companies charge for taking payment by credit / debit card and greedy banks take up to a week to clear a cheque, which in this day and age of technology should be possible to clear in hours rather than days.....

Good point, why does it take 5 days for a cheque to clear??

For a cheque to clear it gets all the way back to the bank where you opened you account and gave you your sort code. They go in a little file of the cheques you have written and only then does the bank release the money.

It is a crazy system for 2012 - the faster they get rid of cheques the better (we get 70% of our money by cheque)

Just another comment on the CIS scheme ( which only exists within the construction industry because the goverment doesn't trust us)

Occasional , one off , smaller payments can be made gross . Its in the book , I can look it out if necessary.

Another twist on the CIS scheme.

The builder (of portable buildings) that I work for is of the opinion he only has to deduct CIS tax for work "on site" but when I'm working on one of his portable buildings in his workshop, he says he doesn't need to deduct any.

Go figure.

I agree he is manufacturing a product at his own "factory" this is not construction works, it is manufacturing, IMHO.

Just go with it then Dave , its up to him , you get paid gross and as long as it goes in your books you havn't evaded tax .

Some interesting points indeed.

Due to a late tax payment 2 years ago they took my exemption off me and put me on 20%, this was mad as I had 3 sub-contractors working for me, so the builder stopped me 20%, then I stopped the sub-contractors 20%, this amounted to me paying more tax than I should have.

Phoned CIS and tax office who said don't worry you will get it back at the end of the year, well hello, I want it now.

Appealed and got my exemption back, but during a conversation CIS said if you are a sub-contractor to a main contractor you are under the scheme.

If your client is not a contractor they are not interested.

Steve I see its sorted now but a Main Contractor has no contract with your sub contractors so should not be deducting tax from their money. He's making you pay wages out of taxed income , so you say you get it back, why the hell should you have to wait a year for your money FFS .
