maybe if you would give full information. at first, no indication of what type of cable. then its SWA. and then its not SWA.

SWA 3 phase with seperate earth and no neutral

its not concentric.......3 seperate 35/50mm red blue and yellow ( not heat shrinked) conductors come out of a thick black cable which has been buried into the concrete floor with a 35/50mm earth strapped to the side. The 3 conductors go to 3 fuse holders each with two fuses, which then feed a meter each. The required neutral goes to a block fom each meter, which then joins to the MET and this all joins to the earth cable strapped to the cables side. Most of this is done inside plastic trunking with DNO stickers. But these can easily fall off before we even turn up:innocent

If the meters are at the feed end of this cable then its the consumers property

This cable feeds these meters.and i have already said there were DNO keep off stickers all over it.......so why are you confused:C:C:C:C:Cheadbangheadbangheadbang

Does SWA cable not come in black at your neck of the woods or something?

a thick black cable is hardly much of a description!

and what size is it?

is it 35 or is it 50mm?

if you really dont know try reading the side of the cable.

either that or get a spark in to show you what to do,

its not really in the realms of DIY.

I would just give a polite reminder to all members that unprovoked insults to other members are not required on the forum. Please correct me if I am wrong but, as I read this thread, it appears that Mr Tessla is asking about a 3phase supply over a 3-core SWA with an external earth conductor being used as a combined Neutral + Earth. From past posts on the forum it is established that Mr Tessla is not a unqualified DIY or 5WW and the actual size of the conductors was not the issue being questioned. It was more the concept of combining the neutral onto an external Earth (Green/Yellow identified) conductor. Not all electricians have the same level of skill or knowledge, which is why we have forums such as this. I appreciate sometimes members have had a long or difficult day and can lose a bit of patience when they feel something is glaringly obvious to them. But please lets keep the forum running in the manner that Admin always intended as one of the main goals.

Well................. It does sound very unusual and not correct but if its on the DNO's side then you will be banging your head on the wall getting an answer. I have seen the DNO connecting up a 16mm Tw&e and throwing it out a window to be connected to the head 3 floors down. When i questioned them they said 'cos we can, what are you going to do about it since it will take a couple of months to get the new services up and running'.

some peoples attitude on this site stinks. I for one have been on the sticky end of the stick and have stopped posting as much as I used to because of it! If I have a problem now I contact NAPIT technical as they help me out without sarcasm.

To be fair, it can be a little off-putting when the o/p appears to present different information in different posts.

I read it the same way as doc; although it isn`t kosher for our wiring; this particular bit of cable seems to be under DNO control, and therefore not subject to our rules & regs.

So can we try this as a definitive answer:

Nicky: it is unsuitable for use by an electrician working to BS7671; however this cable is operated and owned by the DNO - therefore ESQCR (and other) regs will apply to it. As slipper-slapper says, the DNO can do what they want - don`t lose any sleep over it, but don`t copy it either.
