slight OT, but has anyone noticed that most roundabouts now dont have a right arrow on the ground approaching only straight, especially 2+ lanes? even if its left or right, you have a left and straight on arrow
I have done a lot of addition driver training over the years (through choice) and on one of the courses I was told about the phasing out of the right hand arrow on the approach to roundabouts, there is a reason for that, and this is a good one!!

The right hand arrow is being phased out due to "less informed" people driving up to the roundabout and instead of going round the roundabout they went the wrong way on the roundabout against the flow of traffic, because the arrow told them to go right. WOW was my response to that.

Beggars belief!

My theory on driving is 4 fold:-

1/ immigrants who drive like ****e cos they drive that badly in their own countries and can pass a test

2/ Grand Theft Auto - we have now got generations of youngsters who have grown up playing ths game and similar games....

3/ just sheer volume of traffic leading to increased driver frustration  = bad decision making a driving like a twot.

4/ too many gadgets in cars to distract drivers

Point 3 I think is the major problem as this has also lead to trafiic planners making simple junctions difficult / confusing to try and jam a few more cars through every time the traffic lights change, suppossedly increase traffic flow.

Which is ONLY GOING TO GET worse.... more people, more houses, more services (hopefully), more cars........ the pace of change can't continue. Around where I live most of the main roads need to be avoided in the rush hour, and when road works or accidents happen the place grid locks really easily.... leading to more frustrated drivers.

About 6 months ago a section of the M25 near me was closed so everybody jumped onto the surrounding roads - 2.25 hours to do 9 miles FFS.

I am currently seriuosly thinking of moving office, the council is about to start major roadworks lasting 1 year on a seriously busy main road which is unfortunately also the main route between my house and the office. I reckon I would be better off working from home again.

The only good news is that kids no longer seem to want to drive - driving license applications are down 60%. My son is 1 of these, he doesn't see any point in having a license when he can't dream of affording a car and it's running costs.

year of roadworks here on the main road out of the town. 2 roundabouts being widened and extra lane between them. ironically, when they turned the traffic lights off on one of them, all traffic problems at that one disappeared...

Traffic lights seem NOT to be there to make traffic flow any better. I can't think of one case where they actually help traffic flow.

In my home town there was one set that always had long queues in all directions, except when they broke down and the queues disappeared.

And for a long time in a village I passed through on my regular commute to work there was a staggered crossroads with give way junctions. Never any queues. then some genius installed traffic lights. It then took up to 15 minuted just to get through.

I'm not sorry I left the south.

s.funny that, there are definetly traffic flow improvements when lights go down and drivers have to use their brains. They used to have part-time lights on certain junctions in PLymouth, which worked quite well. when traffic was heavy then they were needed, 2am and hardly a car in sight, you could just drive! I suppose the problem with lights is that they bunch traffic together

Ah! That explains why America is full of traffic lights then!

Does that make Milton Keynes the home to the brainiest drivers? Don't it only have roundabouts?

famous for the magic-roundabout I believe. There's a good junction down at Bodmin, 3 mini-roundabouts in a row, an experimental junction from about 40 years ago, updated slightly since with a few extra bollards and reduced to 2 mini-roundabouts in a row :slap

It's right when they say people drive better with a police car in the vicinity, I've certainly noticed it since I got rid of my Volvo, it was often mistaken for an unmarked and you could see people glance at it and their driving remarkably improved. My pet one at the moment is Mercedes and Audi, Merc drivers think indicators are an optional accessory and Audi drivers in general don't care about anything, I've had about 6 near misses lately, each one caused by an Audi.

BMW should be added to that list
