Hi All,

See this thing:

http://uk.rs-online.com/web/p/din-rail-panel-mount-power-supplies/0468308/

If i mounted it in an IP rated metal enclosure would it overheat?? I have never used one before. so have no idea if it gets hot or not.. In the datasheet thing for it. it says ouput 120W. but max input 170w.. Does this means that at max output it gives out 50watts of heat??

Would a little cooling fan be any good?? [The IP rating of the enclosure does not matter really, i just wanted a decent metal box to stick it in!!]

john..

The data sheet I just looked at says 20W @ full load?

You can do a thermal analysis to see what temperature it will end up at, and that is what you would do when designing such things.

a metal box will certainly help dissipate heat - you could add heat sink (ie cooling fins) to outside of box?

Does the box need to maintain IP rating? Otheriwse drill a few small holes top and bottom to allow air movement.

Thanks all!!

I think what i might do is to connect the thing to some lorry headlight bulbs [it is 24v output] and let it run for a while and see what happens.. It is rated at 120w, but the most i will be using will be about 32w, so i cannot see much happening.. I will try it and see though.

Might even make a power supply of my own yet... Not sure if that is a good idea or not though!!
