Both buildings in this thread are magnificent.

Again, the Dutch gables over the front elevation.

The cupolas on each wing, the tall windows, the

brickwork resemble similar but larger buildings

on the Sandringham estate.

Some might call this mock Tudor but the Dutch

influence could tell us that the style is Jacobean.

You're not as daft as I look  Techie,  the second pic is definitely Jacobean , finished in 1635 .

In the whole of Greater Birmingham there are ., I think, only 3 buildings of older historical interest .   (Other than some churches)

Aston Hall

The Old Crown pub , Digbeth .

Sarehole Mill  ( JJR Tolkien)

As a consequence of financial problems, Tolkien sold the rights

of Lord of the rings in the mid-sixties for about £10,000.

It does not look like a lot of cash now, but in those days that may

have bought a very substantial house.

I didn't know he did that .

I do know that The Shire is reckoned to be Moseley Bog , near to Sarehole Mill , where he roamed as a kid.

The Two Towers are deemed to be based on two towers he passed on his way to school in B,ham .( I may have a pic of one)

He would also have passed Gamgee House I believe on his way to school.

I have to say that IMHO  the trilogy needs a good editor to trim it bit.

Perhaps it could used without upsetting Mr Smith .

As in :-

I say I say I say ... did you know President Nixon had a sarehole transplant ?

" Yes I did ... but it rejected him " !!

When I read the Ring Trilogy the descriptions of filthy and darkened dawns

resonated with some of the things I had seen.  His experiences in the trenches

would have been the origin.

Evans...this may have been one problem that Nixon could NOT have taped.

Did you think it needed a good editing , I did , I think it rambled off on tangents sometimes .

Could have done without the Icelandic type saga poems & songs , but it definitely holds the magic of a classic story.

Evans;  I take your point about the Icelandic Sagas and more besides.

Many eternal themes underpin the plot.  Tolkien would have read the

entire Kalevala, an epic poem that existed only in the minds of those

who could recite it in a trance.  It existed in this form for thousands of

years until it was "discovered" in the late 19th century.

The party conference season is drawing to a close.  I am glad that the

ones who have attended them cannot attain this curious condition.

Spare us all from such a situation .

How sad that he had to sell the rights of LOTR ........so his family received nothing when it was filmed ?

You hear stuff like this , when you imagine someone is making a fortune but they don't own the rights .

I think Michael Jackson bought the rights to the EMI Beatle's songs but then Paul McArtney owned the rights to Buddy Holly's records I believe.

Not sure on this but I think some artists re-record their hits and release them so that outfits like EMI etc. don't keep getting all the copyright fees .

You tend to think that an artist made fortune from a particular hit record but I don't think its always the case , hence they keep touring .

:C Not with you on that one Frank.
Right, here goes

Preston Bus station needs dropping to make way for a new corner shop car park extension.....period

if they drop it THEN the buses will have nowhere to stop and will carry on driving around Preston until an honest politician is found to put a stop to it

Oh  ....buses ...I'd forgotten about them ...talk about going off topic ....started in Sheffield Bus Depot ...ended in Middle Earth .  Dunno who dragged it off in that direction ...I blame Technician .  ;)

I will build on that, Evans.
