Hello. I am an adult learner currently doing an advanced apprenticeship to become an NVQ level 3 qualified electrician. I have been working in the trade for 18months and am in my first year of the college course. I however get lots of requests from friends who know I am training to be an electrician. They all want little bits done to their houses. I am confident at doing most domestic work now but am worried about the consequences of doing work and being found out as unqualified. A friend of mine opperates as a domestic installer and the only courses he has done is the 17th edition and part P. I dont think this is enough. Also a lecturer at collegee said you can only do like for like changes as a domestic installer unless you also complete the C&G inspection and testing course.

What do you guys think??

you dont need to be qualified - you need to be competent. one way of doing this is qualifications, but thats not the only way. as long as you know what your doing, then you can do anything.

only note is for domestic - to be scam registered you will need some qualifications, unless you use the LABC notification route

having a qualification is only one method of showing competence,

and, it can be challenged,

IMO doing what your friend has done and then doing such work could be challenged as being competent enough to do so,

the approach you are taking is much more valid to showing your competence(once you get your exams).

myself personally am not a big fan of people taking too many shortcuts.

ps, albomofo, you are down as being Niceic Approved , can you explain this please.?

thanks,I think admin has sorted it now, :D
I sorted it. I had misunderstood and thought it was in reference to the company worked for not personal registration.
