I know this has been aired many times but I came accross the following situation this week and wondered what the ideal way to tackle it would be. We've all talked about expoting the earth from a house to a garage/shed but.............

The situation was this

Detached bungalow with a detached garage (approx 2yds from nearest point of bungalow). The incoming electric supply is labelled as pme (DNO confirm it) and enters the garage where it is terminated in the service head. This feeds a wlex rewireable board (with plug in BS 60898 mcbs it has 6 circuits) which is sited next to the service head in the garage. All circuits then go into some galvanised trunking down into the floor and to the house. The gas meter is also in the garage and is bonded there. Water is bonded at the stop tap in the house.

AM I right in thinking this is an exported earth. In an ideal world it'd be best to move the consumer unit to the house and bond everything there ?

Could I beg those with greater experience/knowledge to give their views and sugestions how to make the installation as safe as possible within reasonable costs.:worship

Listen to the psychic cow.....

Or move cu to house, switch fuse the tails in garage (rcd if cu in house is metal clad)swa to house, isolate from pme & TT the house taking gas meb back to house.

This is nit picking.

There are plenty of houses up here like this, with CU in (slightly) detached garage.

If you were to build a roof over the gap between the house and garage and put a door on each end, then it would all become one building and nobody would complain.

how does that work?

like someones only slightly dead?

normally I wouldnt see it as an issue,

and I dont think the earthing is much to be bothered about either, :D

just TT it, you know you want to, :slap

As far as I can tell , I may have read the op wrong as I am slighty drunk!!

I don't see a problem with earthing as pme supply!! As long as all test reading are good Zs ect and all binding is in place then I don't understand what the prob is!

If u want to move the CU in to the house, as said b4 just switch fuse the tails and then SWA into house job done! But then the cable running under ground should be RCD protected unless SWA IMO

How can it be a exported earth If it's all the SamE installation?

I mean the circuit cables running to the house should be rcd

Does anyone watch the TV program Merlin?

Does magic exist?

Earthing if you dwell too deeply is very mysterious, however what you have to look at is the touch potentials, or step potentials from one point of earth, to the next. There is no magic involved. There are loads of research papers published some of my favorites are the Indian ones, simply because of the arid dry conditions in most area's.If you follow BS7671 you will not go far wrong.

the deeper the better, but how deep do you go before you start to get shallower in Australia?

seriously though, we need to discriminate between the DNO 'earth' and the general mass of earth, and if it is indeed a proper PME system then earth and 'real' earth should be the same,

the issue with 'exporting' or 'moving' earth only arises with TNCS that is not in fact proper PME.

I don't remember I've had a beer since then. I'll check now!

Pg 39 gosg note to 4.2.

It also refers to GN5 which I am guessing is the GN5 relating to the gbg which is not due yet!

gosg fell open to the page!
