I think no one has a right to view or delete anything in you pm box, that is way out of order.
I was going to say check the forum rules but after following a couple of dead links and then falling foul of some of the various forum errors I gave up trying to find them. If you have better luck you might find that the forum owners can do what they like.

Lurch,

If you click the link at the top left of the forum home page the t's & c's are there.

Adrian,

If you read my earlier post, as the PM was to/from one of the board admins, then due to the way I have been told that the forum software works, it may well be that no-one deleted anything from essex's pm box, the admin may have simply deleted it from theirs, which in turn removes the message from the forum database as they are logged in as an admin account.

This is I am told a peculiarity of the software.

So, there is every chance it seems that no one did view or delete anything in essex's pm box, it was simply the software doing it's own thing, following the delete command issued by the admin in question from the admins pm box, thus cascading this delete command through the database.

This is why I don't do any admin stuff, because I don't understand the way the software works, so I leave it to the mods & admins, whilst unpaid volunteers, they do seem to know more about how to "drive" the forum in the background.

Pretty sure you sign up to this what you deem "intrusion" when you join the forum:

I am sorry but who has deemed it as "intusion"? You specifically have put that word in quotes as if to say you have quoted me? I never said that? However, if ANY admin on ANY forum thought that was ethical, whether within the rules or not I am sure the majority of the members of that forum would not be impressed and would vote with their feet.

Have you not been on the internet before? Grow up, get used to it, you are behaving like an ignorant child.

and would vote with their feet.
No-one is stopping you.

Apologies. I put the word in quotes as I felt that was the inference from your comments about the subject. Most would agree with me. You were uncomfortable someone had gone into (intruded?) your mail box and deleted your personal stuff. AKA invasion of privacy etc, if that's not an intrusion I don't know what is.

Mods feel free to dive in and remove/edit my post.

Essex

All I can say is that all the forums which you are on you seem to have an attitude that everyone is wrong and you are the only one that is right.

It's about time you grew up and stopped throwing your toy's out of the pram.

so ironic.

Hmmm seems I missed another argument, darn!

Ok Essex, you have to remember the history of this forum. It was set-up as a deliberate response to forums like Screwfix which are plain damn vindictive and nasty at times with various members permanently at each others throats to score points rather than engaging in discussions that may benefit all. Now, I have to say I learn't an immense amount of the technicalities of regs from these viscious arguments - think pit bulls on speed with barbed wire shoved up their backends and that was a 'nice day'.

Now the current forum owners and mods are very keen to stop this fourm from going that way, perhaps oversensitive sometimes, so when we get a new member like yourself, that seems argumentative for the fun of it sometimes, then you will get 'sat on' quite heavily. Now personally I think you have calmed down quite a lot, and you do spice the forum up a bit, but it would be good if you could put a little more thought into 'how you say things'. You will get a much better response from the regulars if you do.

Arguments can be had on here - just look at some of the postings between me and Steps,

Could the administration confirm that this was the case, and are private messages private or can admin view them if they want. I personally think all PM s are private to the recipients.

erm... the PM was between him and an admin... and if the admin deletes it from his end, then it would also disappear from the messages of the other user

but yes, the admins can usually read PM's but would only do so in there was an issue, such as a member reported the content of the message etc

The forum software contains a feature that will allow Admins to sign in as a member. It's there to allow individual user problems to be addressed, but you could use it to read PMs.

With nearly 26,000 members this is not something any of us have the desire or inclination to do. We would only use it to investigate a complaint.

I've never gone in to read anyone's PMs.

Think of it as private as email:

Adrian,

I have told you that a delete by an admin is a delete from the db, what more is there to say?

If you want, I can go off and delete stuff willy nilly including threads, messages, and members, but, again, as I have said it will probably go wrong, these things would then be gone for good unless we restore the forum from a backup, thus loosing all messages since my actions.

Hence why I don't do such things.

Admin deletes can bypass the recycle bin as it were, same as shift delete does in Windows.

Not strictly true, threads can be still be deleted by admins which depending on forum settings means they are just moved to a hidden forum, akin to the recycle bin. Once they are deleted from there they are gone for good.

Lurch,

What I have said is exactly true, I can do it to any thread or user if I like, I don't because I do not feel comfortable with it.

Things, can, be moved to something like a recycle bin, but a delete from the db is a delete.
