Rcd tripping when switching on fridge or telly

Hi guys,

I wen t to a customer today, Thier rcd keep tripping when they switch on washing machine, but they have not used washing machine, now Fridge and telly trippin it, I tested the rcd its tripping at 36m 1x 18 x5,,,

There is 1 30mA rcd covering sockets, 100 mA rcd as main switch, i took of few socket all looks good,

Any help woul be much appreciated

I would think you have a circuit faulty only way to find out is an insulation test at board. You can test l/n to e to find which circuit and then if its socket circuit unplug everthing insulation test again see what you have.

might be another appliance thats faulty but not bad enough to trip on its own, then the items being used that trip and the final straw so to speak as all electronic equipement leaks something. faults like this are an absolute nightmare.

Its only started tripping last week, it only use to trip when washing machine was on, also only 100 mA RCD trips not 30mA,

Now I am confused are you saying td RCD trips if so why would you be testing it at 5x?

Do a ramp test. Do both RCD's trip?

Actually do 2 ramp tests, one in complete isolation and one with things connected and see how different they are. That will give you the approx. leakage caused by the devices connected.

Is the suspect washing machine actually unplugged, rather than turned off?

A N-E fault in the WM would cause a trip. If a high resistance N-E fault (rather than a dead short) then it would only trip when other (perfectly good) loads are applied.

Washing machine heating elements would cause problems if they are breaking down , power supplies in electronic items suffer from earth leakage . An I R test to check for condition of circuit is always a good idea . and then a process of elimination . although I'm not familiar with P A T I'm thinking that would show up a particular appliance to being faulty . It's just making sure that the circuit itself is healthy .
