Here's one for you techies:

If my computer is playing an audio source (say a Youtube video for example) the sound is going through my laptops sound card and I can listen through headphones plugged into the 3.5mm headphone jack.

Is it possible to record this either on board my comp or by purchasing a gadget/software to allow me to save the sound as a MP3 and then play it on my ipod?

This must be possible?

I am running Vista if that makes a difference.

Audacity - very good program, and its free

it can save to WAV file, but you need to download another (free) part to save it to MP3. but still easy

use it myself for getting audio from youtube etc.

if u use firefox get the dowwnloader addon for it

http://www.downloadhelper.net/

all legal btw.

Using DownloadHelper, you can easily save videos from most of the popular video sites. (Click here for lists of supported sites).

It is also possible to capture all the images from a gallery in a single operation.

Note that DownloadHelper does not break any real protection implemented on the sites. It just give an easier access to clear content that will be downloaded by your browser anyway. Unless exceptions, downloaded videos must be kept on your disk for personal use and not shown on other Web sites.

once on your hard drive then just convert t to the prefered file type.

I could be miles away here as I've never had/used and IPod. But.... Dont they have a record function. Most mp3/4 players do. Sure our lass's creative x-fi has. If it does why not just plug it into laptop headphone jack and record it directly onto it.

but unless you get timing exactly right, you end up missing the start/end or a long silence. with audacity, you can edit what youve recorded, remove silent parts etc, or add a silent part at start/end or whatever you want to do with it

i use itunes and sync with the ipod and can put anything on the ipod mp3,video or anyhting.. sometimes you may have to convert it but usually very easy.

Thanks so much guys :D

Couldn't have done it without you.

Happily on Firefox now :D

Like the add ons - JL's system is easier, Andy's is more comprehensive. Will use them both and make some decent use of me ipod.
