Replacing An Oven Element

Hi all,

Sorry if this is a real noobie question, but I want to know am I allowed to replace a oven element myself or do I need a licenced electrician to do it?

I dont hold an electrical licence in the UK but I did have a limited licence about 15yrs ago in New Zealand where I could work on any plug-in applicance up to 240v/10a.

Just want to make sure that if I do it myself I am not breaking any laws.

Just get on with it mate if you know what your doing and its in your own house and not getting paid to do it can't really see a problem IMO

If you are replacing it yourself my tip would be remove the old one and take it with you when you buy the new one so that you can match it up with a universal element, although they look the same they often have subtle differences so it could save you time.

Welcome to the forum, as has been pointed out you are perfectly free to replace any electrical parts in any domestic appliance at your home. There is no requirement for any training, qualifications or licenses for anyone doing this sort of work.

WARNING THIS WILL SAVE TEARS!

Be aware that the spade connectors may pull off as you remove the element and the wires fall into a nasty horrid inaccessible place!

I pull element forwards F gently and as soon as the wires become visible fit a couple of clamps to them...it saves a LOT of teeth gnashing!!!

Good point on the spade connectors. Worth mentioning that a lot in this situation are a tad different from say the standard 1/4" blade that jut pushes on. some have a spring "catch" on the female that locks into a hole in the middle of the blade. You can be tugging the thing just out of sight/reach forever so look out for this type:
