Am i right in thinking a 4k7 resistor = 4.7 ohms for example? so i 0k5 resistor would be 0.5 ohms and so on????

4k7 is 4700 ohm. 0.5 is 500 ohms

NO, as Andy said the 'k' inbetween the digits implies the first figure is thousands. The same principle applies to figures with 'M' in betwwen the digits, 2M2 = 2.2Meg Ohms or 2200000ohms. http://wiki.xtronics.../Resistor_Codes
