safe isolation on site guide

hi quick question, could someone please tell me if the safe isolation procedure is in the on site guide and what page? i cannot find it

I don't think it is mate, although I haven't got ny copy with me.

What are you after, the official procedure or the actual way to perform the checks - 3-phase or single?

no mate i dont need the official procedure i,m doing my nvq at the minute and it keeps stating the safe isolation procedure as stated in the onsite guide and ive looked in the onsite guide and i cant find it

if i remember right i think its in guidance notes 3

The safe isolation procedure is not covered in the on site guide, as nutsy has said it is covered in the GN 3/ Guidance Note 3

1) Seek Permission to isolate

2) Locate means of isolation-Isolate

3) Lock off, fit warning signs, enclosures, barriers etc (keep key on your self at all times).

4) Select GS38 approved voltage tester indicator

5) Test voltage tester on proving unit or known live source (to verify unit is working)

6) Test that installation is dead, testing between outgoing L-E, L-N, N-E

7) Reprove voltage tester on proving unit or known live source

8) Commence work

1 major problem with that. you have not proved you have isolated the correct circuit. which leaves it open for someome to turn on the power to the circuit your working on

In reall terms, ignoring the "seek permission stuf" and select "GS38" stuff

I would go for

1) check tester is working

2) check circuit is live

3) isolate

4) check circuit is dead

5) check tester is working

If you dont check it was live to start with you have nothing to compare against

Now a cross between the 2 procedures above could be good.

so what would you accept?

mine is usually

check live

isolate

check dead

energise

check live

isolate & lock out

check dead

check tester

and sometimes short L-N or E

and if neutrals are ever seperated, check each end (especially on lighting circuits - borrowed neutrals will show as dead until you break the circuit and one may now be live)

at least your 100% that you have the correct circuit, and between first isolation and checking dead, the circuit hasnt tripped another breaker elsewhere (very unlikely, but it is possible)

obviously, if supply is already dead, then check everything is correctly isolated
