My first, off the cuff response would have been "capacitor(s)" take a look at the board and look for bulging tops on the electrolytic capacitors. A quick Google brought this link up. Plenty to read:

TR Forums • View topic - Samsung LCD TV - LNS4051 power on problem

Look for the capacitor tops like this - often not quite as pronounced, just slightly domed:

Agreed good place to start with Samsungs, often another indicator is a clicking from the set, last time I repaired one it also had a blown power transistor, found it simply by inspecting the main power board, had blown two of the three legs so easy to spot

phone samsung today told them the problem we had and sn number of tv and said it was out off warant but they said as a curtesy from samsung they would send an engineer out to solve the problem

free off charge glad i made the phone call

I really don't get where people get the idea that Samsung are a "quality" brand.

I've fitted many, and repaired a few, and in terms of picture quality they are just ordinary, nothing special, and these days of tiny, hidden speakers, the sound is poor as well.

And looking inside them, they are built just as cheap as the budget brands, and yes there's the well known problem or poor quality capacitors used.

If you want a "quality" television these days, it's really only Sony or Panasonic that make quality. Otherwise just go for cheap, because imho Samsung are far from a quality manufacturer.

If you want cheap, get ANY set that uses Vestel panels. The service information is usually available for free on the net, and replacement boards can usually be bought cheap from many dealers, or from ebay etc.

According to our local TV repair guy ,on the subject of poor sound output from the flat screen sets, Panasonic are the only ones he knows that sound OK . All the others have ,understandingly I suppose, little narrow speakers.

We bought an LG , picture looks fine to me ,but sound was carp, didn't notice in the shop, so we play it through the DVD player, sounds OK .

I also get the feeling that Sony and Panasonic seem to be the quality ones . I'm not an expert, just a feeling.

samssung engineer came yesterday and the problem found to be 4 electrolytic capacitors had blown replaced them all working fine now and they said no charge and the repair would have a 3 month guarantee

I got a problem with my tv it's a combi with DVD, the trouble is the DVD player starts up and shuts off, sometimes it plays for a while but still it shuts off. I took it apart to see if I could see what was happening the red led light would appear when staring up but then it decides to just shut off any ideas????

I agree with that. I hung a huge Panasonic tv on the wall this week, and I was impressed by the picture quality AND the sound quality. Not hi fi sound, but VERY acceptable and far far better than most LCD sets I have heard.

Told ya! When they go again and it's out of warranty it should be easy enough to get some from RS etc. Cheers.

My parents went and bought a 37" plasma Panasonic (from John Lewis). Only 720P but lovely, fluid picture. Very impressed.

I usually try RS for caps as a first stop. Maplins used to be good but now the best you get is a "mixed bag" for like a tenner. Had to get some odd values recently for monitors and went to Cricklewood Electronics who I've used for many years:

Cricklewood Electronics - CCTV. CCTV Equipment. CCTV Systems. Digital CCTV Cameras

Also this lot in East London:

Name: E.L.C. East London Components

So many people have had this capacitor problem that Samsung are making sure they don't get a kicking from Trading standards, so not surprised they did this FOC as they and Panasonic account for the majority of TV's sold currently so are wise not to upset customers

Most of the TV's I install are Panasonic they have taken Sony's crown as the best Japanese brand

The obsession with thin TV's has led to poor sound on most sets, basically bass needs to move air to work effectively, which thin TV's have a lack of due to design, if you look at Panasonic 2011 models you will see that they have a bulge on the back at the bottom this helps with sound. The new 2012 Panasonic models have been designed to improve the poor bass, and they do a pretty good job. Although a bit pricey a number of my clients have opted for the Bose SR1 sound bar, which is very effective and makes up for the TV limits simply because of the wireless subwoofer.

If you are looking for a quality flat TV then take a look at the new Panasonic GT50 plasma models, What HiFi said it was the best TV they have ever seen and I can concur, the 50" is stunning
