No phone call, but I lived there for 5 years back in the 90`s, working on big desert irrigation projects. Really enjoyed it.

But beware, there were also some really dodgy employers out there. I don`t know what happens now, but back then, the employer held your passport, and organised exit re-entry visas etc. So you could be stuck for a while with a bad job. Maybe different now, but I would definitely want to speak with somebody already working for the same company before taking the plunge.

Having said that, living and working there was a good experience, with good pay, and no tax!

 
I saw a TV program where some ex pats lost their job and the company they worked for have to inform the bank, this then put a freeze on their bank accounts and they had limited time to find another job or face jail for not paying any loans etc.

can be really good if it works out right for you,

though in my experience most of the sparky work requires compex now.
