Hi everyone, i am just after a little bit of advice really.

I have been in the trade for about 6 years and have only ever worked for firms that carried out bog standard domestic installs, mainly housing association work. Well almost, but i was not very often one of the select group getting the varied jobs.

If someone asked me to carry out an installation outside of my comfort zone i would not have a clue due to limited experiences.

How then do i acquire the knowledge that i crave. There must be others in the same scenario?

Are there any really good books or website`s out there that anyone has used?

Many thank`s to all who take the time to reply

What is it you want to know about? Industrial? 3 phase? Agricultural? Caravans? Shops? Festivals? Horse riding arenas?

With your basic knowledge and your BRB it's all the same in principal, just need to find the specific requirements :D

What i mean is: if someone asked me to install a specific piece of equiptment such as a door entry system or sustained emergency lights or a burglar alarm for example.

How do you know what you need in terms of materials, Cable type etc. Where do you run your cables to? Like a haynes manual but for electrical installations

JFGI, got me where I am today. ;)

I still do it today, the internet is rammed full of info on allsorts of stuff, just sit reading it so you have a good grasp of the basics, you can then go from there with a bit of knowledge to get some work with someone doing some of these things you want to do or start with a bit of playing with test boards at home and some kit from eBay etc...

Tavcom are pretty good for training in security related things.

Hands on is the only real way to learn.

However it is getting harder and harder for anyone to do that.

I did industrial and had no idea about domestic, then I moved to domestic and was out of touch on industrial, now I do more industrial, and never want to return to domestic.

However that said I still do the occasional ones.

Thank`s for the replies. I am unable to join the select group Evans Electric as i no longer work there.

I am just finding it harder and harder nowadays to find employment with just basic domestic experience.
