Evening all. Advise please. I have been at a house fitting some lights. Whilst at the CU noticed client has an electric shower with no RCD protection, it also has no isolation switch or pull-cord. :|

Anyway after a talk with the client they would like an RCBO fitted. But Shower unit is embedded and silicone to death, so no access within unit. What do I put on cert if I can

You can test RCBO at board and as you have said it should make things safer. I hate it when things get siliconed in and another hate is when diyers tile around accessories rather than take them off the wall.

are u putting in a pull cord, could u do zs from there?

not sure on that see what other say, but if u did i would put it all on the cert

like kitchen sockets, and tile round trunking, its all just wrong

Sounds like a really dodgy shower install apart from you didnt need rcd protection under previous regs so long as Zs, earthing and main bonds and supplimentary bonding all in place.

If it was me i dont think I would be happy changing the mcb to an RCBO on that cct unless I could verify my test results at the shower terminals.

Problem will be that you were the last one to make an alteration on that part of the installation by changing to rcbo so it will be your responsibility to ensure everything is up to requirement.

Really you need to explain to customer that shower cct needs improvement, tell them what needs to be done and verified and why cos its all about their safety and you would like to keep them alive for future custom:)

Then really its upto them to have it all re done properly....otherwise you are going to end up rebodging an already bodged up job!

hope this helps somewhat.

like others have said really, install pull switch in bathroom, take all readings from that point and make a note on the cert, be a lot safer than how it is now.

I agree in principle Batty with what your saying, but

1.how is he going to verify polarity? If its an old shower will it still work with L & N reversed,

2.Whats he gonna do if he fitted RCBO and it trips straight away? He will then have problem of having to remove the shower casing and the customer might not have agreed to this. This then could end up in wasted journey, loss of money in part ordered and not required.

Personally if it makes it safer do it. Check main bonding, suplementry bonding is in place and correct. Explain to the customer the potential problems with installing an RCBO on an older circuit and an that it may lead to further work being involved and recommend they fully upgrade the shower to current regs and explain to them the safety benefits, they will probably go for it. As for the cert get what readings you can and note the problems on cert.

Electricity and a soaking wet person... is it just me that doesn't like electric showers!!!

Not just you I would never have one in my bathroom.

Evening all,

Just to wander slightly here, I went to upgrade a shower a while back to rcbo and although it wasn't siliconed in it had been reconnected by the plumber. Now having done an insulation test, reconnected and i went to take cover off with meter in hand he said, no need mate i've connected it meself and i'm part p. Brilliant i thought. So wheres the results so i can compare mine with yours i said, still taking the cover off,...............Well i haven't got them i just connected it back and its working ok......................................

Righty oooh then X(

No earth loop at the shower........ isolator switch had a no cpc connected on the load side...................

I believe you should verify the connection in the shower and test accordingly

People like them because they are cheap to buy what they don't realise they can cost four times the cost of the shower to fit.
they aint great and never look nice,
