Smoke alarm tails (hispec)

Hi I would just really like to see how people have terminated these themselfs.  Ive seen so many different ways an have been taught that they should be done using a junction box ( I now know I should have used a conduit or round patress ) in ceiling first feel like a bloody idiot as I pride myself on my work but had just gone off the hispec instructions wich actually just called for a connection block making no reference to a patress comments would be appreciated

Each product is supplied with a unique ‘First Fix’ base. This enables the installer to complete the wiring before the plasterers and painters coat the surface without interfering with the detector’s circuitry.

At the second fix stage the installer just completes the final connection without the need for tools. If the Electrician is obliged to install the wiring from the side of the unit then we recommend using our general purpose pattress, catalogue number HSA/PA. Designed with ample knock-outs your customers will find that installation is quick and cost effective."

Hi Murdoch thanks for reply. I will do from now on much better units ive fitted a lot of the hispec ones using the jb technique as I was told there leads were thick enuf wich they are 3x thicker wise of insulation but still single coating I I i was beating myself up. Think all sparked end up that way think u no it all

Sorry murdoch fat fingers on small iPhone. I was just saying I have terminated a lot of these hi spec smokes using junction boxes an had only really questioned it today will use aico from now on

Another vote for Aico.

Why all the other carp ones with flying leads are allowed beats me.  Does anyone know of another make apart from Aico that actually have a terminal box on the base?

Really couldn't agree more. I think only reason I was put onto hispec was because aico used to be quiet large units in comparison, wich put customers off with there nice new ceilings

Hi Murdoch thanks again. The base is just that a base doesn't provide you any means of termination. The wholesalers have always bagged them up with a small 20 amp jb for connection wich I realise now isn't really correct. However  I have always been told to follow the manufacturers instructions, Over bs7671 an assumed the flying lead was fit for purpose

Hi Andy I wish I had thought of that ages ago. Just beating myself up to be honest wish it had stated that in instructions !!

imread somewhere that the fly leads were of 'reinforced insulation', but cannot remember where.

hispec make really quality stuff...said nobody EVER!

i have had no end of trouble with their replacement/retrofit 2D28W emergency gear trays.  You are lucky to get 12 months out of them, so it's a good job they have a two,year guarantee.there is no other make stocked locally.

i have talked my largest client into going for the Kosnic with the corridor dimming function.already done two small projects for them with a 100 unit job in the new year

Hi kerching thanks for your  input I hope your right regarding fly leads. it was always something I thought myself, as the insulation on them is at least 3x thickness of insulation on say a 1mm twin  conductor. Will defo use DL from now on or better still just install aico.

I dislike 80% of HiSpec products......I A M not too happy with the other 20%!!

AICO everytime

no idea where I read/heard about the reinforced insulation, sorry.

same applied to a make of downlighters. MF Always said they had reinforced insulation , but NOW amazingly they are also oversheathed 

they may even be Hi Spec as well
