Normally a full rewire to comply with building regulations would require smoke alarms to be fitted, so the answer is yes they do.

Sounds like you do not want to? :(

It was a building reg. which said, I think, smoke alarms should be fited if major electrical works are being carried out. The same when a loft conversion or added bedroom. We have been fitting them for years now on rewires.

no not at all Greenhornet , I started a rewire for a young couple , there grandad of 70 years of age, and his friend who is a spark , have said you don't need to fit smoke alarms , sockets are too high 450mm , switches are too low 1200mm and my price is expensive etc, interfering old gits basically , so i just wanted to clarify ... and yes i always fit them on my rewires .

If anyone has a link , that would be good

cheers

Just to make things clear, i always fit smoke alarm systems on rewires.

And i may be wrong here but:

I thought the wording of the building reg was 'major refurbishment work' so it boils down to if you consider a rewire in this category.

If i had a customer who did not want a smoke/heat alarm system installed on a rewire without a good reason. i would be questioning their conviction to see the job through.

Ahhh the dreaded I know it all because I did 14th editiond grandads!

I have had a few of them and trying to convince them of the ammendments and updates is normally fruitless.

I pity your dilema.

you could try the electrical safety council they do a few leaflets, or your scheme provider, failing that I am sure there is a section in the onsite guide.

I may be mistaken, I dont really read many regs books they confuse me :p

If you know your local building inspector ask him to give them a friendly call to explain that self certification is not an electrical thingy its far more a building compliance regulation.

Some LABC's insist on the smoke alarms to be fitted as part of the compliance with a rewire passing building control.

In the near future co2 alarms will also have to be fitted in accordance with risk assesments.

For all interested there is a section on the EIC that asks for the number of smoke alarms fitted, I doubt anyone would fill this in as N/A on a full rewire.

Another consideration is I did a rewire for a couple who foster children, I had to install a catergary L2 fire alarm system to comply with local authority guidlines, nothing to do with building regs or electrical regs, just another regulation set by some other body who have an interest in the correct methods of protection.

You may want to start with On Site Guide,

Chapter 7

page 64.. thro Page 66.

7.5.2 Smoke & heat alarms

Also Building regs Approved document B.

(you can download on-line versions of all of the Building regs Approved documents)

P.S.

The socket and switch height do NOT have to be changed on rewire,

they can be left to match the excising building aesthetics.

But if no major issues repositioning I would also follow 450 / 1200 heights! ;)
