Hi Chaps and chapess's

So many questions?

I am sure i saw on the download area a while ago a circuit diagram for making a checkbox for testing my multifunction testers. I would like to make one to checkout my tester as I bought it off e-bay and i cant find a serial number on it and am worried that i might have bought a stolen item or is it normal for a MFT1552 tester not to have a serial number on it. These are the first testers i have bought and ideally want to get them calibrated but do i need a serial number for calibration?

All testers should have a serial number somewhere it maybe inside but generally will be outside. A serial number is needed for calibration otherwise you will have no record of which instrument it is. A secondhand one would need calibrating otherwise you have no way of knowing how accurate it is

and welcme to the forum.

Hi Mark

Good to see another sparks from the East on the Forum.

Your 1552 should have a label on the bottom with serial number, if not then as long as You give it a number and mark it on permanently then that should be ok.

I would recommend a calcard, plug in RCD and non RCD protected working socket at home is all you need for regular checks.

Get the Meter calibrated (Wholesalers have regular calibration days) then take a set of readings on your home checking system as a standard then regular checks to compare from then on. Make sure you keep a record.

Thank you for all your helpful replies, by the way i have now found the posts about making a checkbox and will look into making one just for the fun of it. With regard the serial number problem (or should i say, lack of one) i think i will just engrave one on the bottom where it should be as suggested.

Oh just another quicky, what sort of cost should i be expecting for a calibration and where can i get it done around the Norwich area.

+1 isswww recommended.

I'd contact the seller and ask for the serial number as your thinking of getting it calibrated. And let them know that your suspicious about if it's chord or not. But I'd be careful getting it calibrated incase it is a 'chordie' as you'll lose it and the money you've paid unless you went through paypal. Good luck anyways matey

I bought it about a year ago and have moved since then so have new e-mail etc so cant get back into e-bay as my old user name.(its all a bit new this computer stuff). But thank you all for your help its most appreciated. Although i am now worried about getting it calibrated????? (in case it is nicked)

PM "megger mark" mate. He`ll be the best one to advise you at this point.KME
I would rather questions be asked on the forums Mate, that way - we can all benefit from them and will save Mark getting bombarded with the same questions.

(Unless they are personal, of course).

Mark (OP),

Megger Mark (ISSWWW) actually has a Check Box on TEF Auctions at present for

Maybe you do, AD; but if the O/P has a legality issue, he is probably better discussing that with Mark on a 1-to-1 basis?

As and when he gets an answer to this, I would hope he would choose to share it. In the meantime, I though a discreet approach would have been the best idea, though you apparently disagree?

If OP has a legality issue, how can Mark sort that? I would have thought it would be better to raise these concerns with the seeler of the item? (receipt etc).

What is that supposed to mean??? See bold Quote above.

Having read the opening post fully, and NOT Scanned - I see OP is concerned as he would like to get them calibrated.

However, I stick by my statement above. I would take it up with the seller First. Ask for a copy of his receipt where he purchased this from.

Firstly thanks for all the recommendations guys, much appreceiated indeed.

There are several interesting points here:

1/ It's nice that that you care that the meter might be stolan, beleave it or

not some people don't care.

2/ We receive loads of Meters without serial numbers or ledgable numbers, it

does not mean it is stolan. We tend to issue a number on the certificate

and put it on the instrument label. However it would be better to mark it

up yourself with a unique number.

3/ If it is stolan, the lack of a serial number would make it next to

impossible to track it down.

4/ Making a check box is quite a simple affair and if you think this fun then

crack on, however we do, as admin has already pointed out, have a

really good check box on TEF.

If you would like me to calibrate your instrument i will be glad to help, my contact details are on the web site. As you are in or around Norwich you could just pop in and we will look it over while you wait, i might even:put the kettle on

Now now chaps don't fall out (ha ha).

Thanks for everyones help, i will pop in to Meggermarks unit and have a chat with him about it and keep you posted on this. I am amazed at how helpful you all are, i didnt think i would get so much advice and like Admin says i think it might be helpful to others to see what happens as i am sure i am not the only one in this situation. Thanks again and goodnight!!!!!!!!

Regarding costs, I have 3 seperate instruments (PITA) calibration costs usually
