can anyone help?? im currently installing one double socket in a utility room and i have noticed that there is a switched fused spur already in the room, so i investigated and i found out that its a radial straight from the RCD split way consumer unit straight to 13amp switched fused spur.....but the only problem i have is that it is wired in 6mm2 T + E, It is protected by a 20amp mcb and being a split board it is all protected by the main RCD, i know the ratings and cables sizes preferred usually that are 2.5mm and 4.00mm but is there anyway i can use this 6mm2??? all answers welcome thanks

ok, i have only just signed up i didn't know where to post my question, so the 20amp rated mcb will be sound then?

i have bell'd out the cable it was previously for a spa bath but its no longer there so it is just a spare and wondered if it would ok to use?

There's no problem using a larger cable than required, as long as it will physically fit into the terminals of the accessory. So your 6mm will be fine for what you propose.

My guess is that cable used to feed a cooker point once, in the past when the utility room used to be a kitchen, and it was just re used for it's present function.

spot on mate nice one!! it was an old bathroom previous and the spur fed a spa bath but just wanted to make sure i could use the same for a socket! cheers

It would be wise to verify the integrity of the cable before reusing it for a new function. Continuity and insulation resistance tests would verify it is not damaged somewhere along its length. Assuming it is all electrically intact it will not present any danger having a larger conductor size.

Duplicate threads merged, as they only make the forum messy and cumbersome to follow. Judging by the nature of the question, I have moved this to the DIY section, as it seems most appropriate.
