Queensland has a lot more sun that we do, so solar would be more useful through the day. but still not much use overnight, and it gets dark early over

A question of "be careful what you wish for"

The result could be the coal power stations shutting down. Then there will be no power at night.

Yes Queensland is the sunshine state.

Most of their coal is open cast mined.  My SIL over there lives on a farm and they have the blight of a new open cast mine opening just a mile or two from their boundary. their neighbour who has the coal under his land is likely to be bought out, but they might just end up stuck there next to an open cast soal mine.

think that article is rather over egging things, but it is interesting. All the inverter manufacturers are working on small battery storage units built into inverters, just a couple of Li-ion cells, enough to power lights for a few hours. Just need a bloody big version to power the UK LOL

My Dad lives in Spain. One of his friends lives up a hill and only has solar and batteries, no network connection.

Cost a fortune and the batteries have been stolen twice. One time they knocked a hole through the wall of the house.

very keen thieves!! Batteries certainly cost a lot for a complete set-up like your dad's friend, but somtimes it's about changing your life style to suit circumstances.
