I found this on another forum. Made me laugh anyway:

"husband of our cleaner has a broken electric drill
could he borrow my multimeter
hm, if he does not have one he probably does not know how to use it, anyway the wife had lent my meter out by the time i heard about it, yeh dont go there !

he brought it back later as it was not suitable for purpose, 'for car use only' he said
it works just fine for me in the boat / house

just looked at it, says 'auto - range' on the front"

It's all too common sadly,it doesn't matter how good the meter is,if the person attached to it can't use it then it makes no difference whether it's a £500 Fluke or a £5 Maplin special.unfortunately some people think the dearer the meter the better the results,I once saw a mechanic trying to find a fault on a car,it wouldn't start and I asked the obvious, was the battery flat? He assured me that it wasn't as his meter was reading 12 volts. It was a fairly expensive meter supplied by the company, unfortunately it was not a battery tester so it didn't put a load on it under test, desperation and a set of jump leads soon revealed it was a duff battery!

That's not quite true.

My Fluke multimeters will always give an accurate reading that you can trust.

A cheap multimeter I had, will start to give wildly wrong readings when the battery starts to go flat. The fluke will still give a correct reading as long as there is power enough in the battery to actually give a reading.

Local gas board muppet ( many years ago) heard me talking of earth fault paths....measured in ohms....fault clearance times etc

tried it with his el,cheapo multimeter on Ohms scale

almost blew him out through his wedding ring

same bloke pressed start contactor in on a star delta whilst it was  running in Delta on a big blower unit

he is known locally as Terry Courgettewit

Dave, you have proved my point perfectly, yes a cheap meter may give odd readings when the battery starts to fail, but anyone who knows what they are doing will suspect that reading isn't correct, whereas the person who doesn't will just blindly accept it.

Speaking of star delta starters,I once went out to a job on a large compressor, the "electrician" and I use the term loosely, had spent about 3 hours wiring the starter before he walked away.Press start and the contactor went in as normal, when the timer ran out and it changed to run it promptly went bang and blew the fuses,he'd blew an awful lot of fuses before admitting he was beaten. When it started up it was in star, then instead of changing to delta when the timer ran out,he'd wired it so the star held in and the delta came in as well, basically shorting phases yet the guy had beed adamant he new what he was doing.
