I was recently visiting a friend who was told by their local spark that they could not have a pendant in their toilet.

would i be right in thinking, that since it does not contain a bath or shower, that this is not a special location?

Is there any Zoning to apply to wash hand basin or a shower?

Firstly dont put a pendant in a toilet.......

it will get wet and wont work

no issues with pendants in toilets its ok

you have pendants in kitchens and they contain a sink !!!!

i would tend to put a batten fitting in a toilet anyway

sorry Theory,

i can't tell whether you're for or against?

batten is no good as the ceiling is too high

Neither can Theo, ;) its one of the Great Myths of the Trade, I've heard it dozens of times.

My M8 who is an excellent sparks , still maintains that you can't put a pendant in a kitchen, its got to be a BH at least.

Its because the firm he did his time with had conjured it up and he just can't shake it off.

Theres a thread full of them somewhere on here.

Toilet = not a special location. I have these sorts of discussions with people all the time.

My step son and partner moved into a new property just before christmas and I'd say the house itself was built early 2009 . I have noticed that in their ensuite a batten holder fitting is positioned on the ceiling at about a metre from the shower cubicle . I thought that this fitting had to be I P rated to at least 44 . There is a batten fitting in the bathroom too . The C U is a M E M and has 1 RCD which again I thought that new boards fitted had to be dual RCD . The house is a 4 bed .

sorry guys

its ok for a pendant in a toilet

heavy day yesterday......

As the others have said you are quite correct, a room containing a toilet, (even with a hand basin as well), Is NOT a special location.

You can install whatever will fit!

In practical terms batten fitting or other ceiling mounted type fittings are often used due to limitation of space,

e.g. a pendant with lampshade can 'overpower' the appearance of a small room.

or sometimes the doors swinging open end up knocking the fitting if your not careful.

basically you need the height or width for a pendant to look OK in a toilet/cloakroom type environment..

Approx 1m from shower cubicle?

therefore >0.6m from edge of enclosure,

therefore Outside of zones...... no problem then? :|

What are the ceiling heights >2.25m from floor? ?:|

Only need IPX4 IF fitted inside zones 1 or 2!

or...

IPX7 in zone 0

IPX5 if water jets used to clean down surfaces.

Thats reg 701.512.2 page 167

;)

The ceiling heights from memory are at least 2.25m . I should have looked in the BRB though , just being a bit lazy O) They want to change the fitting anyway so have suggested one that is IP 44 just to be on the safe side . Guinness

Wouldn't the whole fitting need to be above 2.25m too?
Although all the circuits in the house are RCD protected I would still fit an IP44 rated fitting . maybe I'm a bit too cautious but I would feel happy about it but your point about the actual fitting being 2.25 clear from the floor I will get out my regs book and see . :)
